15 Do’s and Don’ts When You Leave a Job

When you leave a Job you essentially step out of a relationship. It is never an easy decision to leave a job in which you have invested long years of your career. It is one of the tough decisions anyone can take due to financial and emotional attributes associated with it. However change is never constant and likewise people do take such decisions to move ahead in their career. While moving ahead in your career is never a bad move but the transition from one place to another is a matter of prime importance. It is definitely a moment of truth in your career in which even small details needs a lot of attention.

 

Years of relationship built with a company should be handled very carefully. Hence it becomes important to look into the finer details whenever you put down your papers. The List of 15 Do’s and Don’ts will give a good idea about what is expected out of you and how you should conduct your behavior.

 

Don’ts

1)    Never give bad Feedback against Your Boss or Senior- If you leaving a job than there is no point in giving bad feedback against your supervisor. People are capable enough to realize the reason of your exit. This will harm no one but you only.

2)    Don’t Burn Bridge with your Boss or Senior- Keep the relationship intact. If you have passed so many years working with him than keep the momentum going till your last day.

3)    Never Blog Bad about the Company- When you are out of a relationship there is no point talking bad about it in social media’s. You don’t like it, leave it. This is the best you can do with the company. Rest everything is a frustration which needs different solution.

4)    Never Spread Rumors – This is the worst thing to do in any situation. It not only makes you look bad but also have capability to hound you in next job. There is no point giving yourself a bad name while you exit the company

5)    Never Demotivate your Co-Workers- Many times Co-workers come to you for advice or suggestion. It is important that you should not demotivate anyone with your words or gestures. Don’t become a guru and spoil the peace of your co-workers.

6)    Never give Bad Recommendation- Your Company might ask for your feedback related to you juniors or colleagues. While you can be neutral, it is never advised that you give bad feedback about anyone. If the person is bad you should have taken action in your tenure. Leave this decision to new manager. You never know, your junior might click with him.

7)    Never Steal anything From the Company- This is worst thing to do. Maintain your dignity. While stealing data is an offence, even stealing stationery is bad and it become worse if someone notices it.

8 )    Never talk Bad about Your Company to New Employer- This gives negative vibes about you only. Always talk about the challenges you want in your new job and stay away from criticizing your old company.

9)    Never Break any Rules of the Company- Abide by rules even when you have put down your papers. Don’t make complacency as one of the reason which gives you bad name in future.

10) Never Disclose Company Secrets Entrusted on you- People entrust you with secrets because they trust you. Keep the faith. Never disclose any secrets and assure people that they can trust you in future too.

11) Never Misuse any of the Company’s Resources- Everyone essentially keeps an eye on you and knows that you are around for small time only. Don’t misuse any of the company resources lest it badly reflects on your personality. Be more watchful of your actions and behavior.

12) Never Disclose Details about Your Company till the Time you join it- Some companies do play tricks in order to retain employees. Don’t give them the chance by disclosing any information about your new company. If you want smooth and peaceful transition than this is the main point which you should keep in mind.

13) Never Boast about Your New Job- Salary, Benefits or Position; never boast about it in front of anyone. People are intelligent enough to understand such things and bragging about it won’t make you look smarter at all.

14) Don’t resign if you are not fully Determined to Leave the Company- I always believe that decision should be final. Staying back after negotiations leads to an image change and might prove bad for you in future. While some people use this as tactics, a personal introspection is very important in this case.

15) Don’t Surf Private Stuff in Office- Company can monitor your movements in order to extract information. Be secretive about your personal stuff and what you surf in office. You information at times can turn against you too.

 

Do’s

1)    Always keep a Proof of your Resignation- While it is important that you should inform your senior about it in person, it is very important that you keep a proof of it. Write a mail or submit it in paper but make sure that your resignation date gets recorded. People tend to forget or play games and you need to be better than them.

2)    Always give Proper Notice to the Company- Try to abide by your employment agreement. One month or three months, try to give ample time to your company. Don’t hold them to ransom.

3)    Be very Polite in your Conversation- Understand the situation of the person in front of you. Your Boss potentially has lost a resource and there is a probability that he might lose his cool too. However it is important for you to be very polite and maintain your composure. The discussion with your Boss should be meaningful and in good terms.

4)    Give Proper and Meaningful Reason of your Departure- If you really want to help the company than give a meaningful reason of your departure. If the reason is money than spell that out. If it is some person than do talk about it without taking any names.

5)    Complete Pending Tasks Before your Final Day-This will not only make you feel good but will also force the company to think highly about you. Give your company no reason to complain and maintain your deliverables till your last date.

6)    Try to Get Recommendation from your Employer-If you are leaving on good note than do try to get the recommendation from your superiors. A letter of recommendation or a paragraph in LinkedIn would do wonders for you.

7)    Always take care to Settle all Dues- Don’t keep this till the last day. Try to settle all your dues and make sure nothing gets delayed. Most of the people keeps coming back to company for long time to settle dues which takes the charm out of their departure.

8 )    Always be Careful about the Settlement Part- Calculate what you owe to company or your company owes to you. Be through about all parts of the agreement. Money is precious and make sure you get everything you deserve.

9)    Join the Online Groups or Communities of your Company- Be in touch with your colleagues. This is great way to be in touch and seek or give any help in future. It is always good to know more about your colleagues and track their movements.

10) Take email address and phone number of your Colleagues- Maintain good relationship with your ex-colleagues. Be in touch with them. Invite them for dinner or go out to meet them. Be social and maintain relationship for long time.

11) Help your Company Hire a Replacement- If you need to hire your replacement than do help your company with the task. Write a job description, work with agencies, scan resumes, and invite them for interview. This is biggest favor that you can do for your company.

12) Do Rollover of your Accounts- In many countries there are benefits that can be rolled over to your new company. It is important not only for taxation standpoint but also maintaining a corpus. Be aware of all documentation and take necessary steps to complete procedure on time.

13) Always take your Personal Belongings and Data- Always take your stuff with you when you leave a company. It is your property and you should take it without doubt. Data which is yours and not of your company needs to be properly transferred and should not be left out in the company premises.

14) Give Proper Handover- This is important in order to neutralize your departure and helping company stay on course. True relationship always demands a care and a self less service. Give proper handover of your work and ask your replacement to be in touch in case he faces any problem.

15) Do mail a Thank You note to your group and colleagues- Bid adieu to your friends and colleagues through a Mail and verbally too. It is the last good gesture you can make and you should be very careful with your words. Be nice and make sure your words sounds like music to everyone ears.

It takes lot of years to build relationship while it takes few minutes to break it. Know what is important for you and act accordingly.
