People don’t work for company, they work for their Boss. The environment can be good or bad depending upon his mood. You can be a success or a failure based on his decision.

Considering Boss as a constant factor you need to realize 2 things

1. He will be there whether you accept it or not

2. Your success depends on him whether you accept it or not

To me Boss is not exactly the evil that it may eventually sound. To be successful you need a horse, and your Boss is your best bet to be that Horse. He is basically your Horse to Ride. (There is an excellent book by Jack Trout and Al Ries on this- Horse Sense). Boss is an effective tool which will help to monitor and control your destiny.

So two things again come out here

1) Boss is your biggest weapon for success

 2) How you use this weapon depends on you

How to Drive His Decision

All Bosses are smart and that is why they are there. They may have some experience which you feel have become redundant over the period of time. You may think that their learning curve have got plateaud. Their subject matter expertise has not grown to that extent. Also as per you there is a compelling reason for your idea to get accepted rather than part of his wish list.

The Truth is

1. They do have their opinion

2. The can be adamant about it too.

So the question now come is how to drive his decision based on your idea. Its simple

1. Make your idea his idea

2. Praise him for his Idea

To put your idea in his mouth you need to talk strategically. You need an art not only to make him reject his own idea but also vouch your idea. How you go about it

1. Hear patiently his idea

2. Tell him his idea is excellent

3. Tell him that from his idea you got an understanding which you want to share

4. Present your idea

5. Make it sound like his idea

6. Show how it is better than his idea

7. Make him feel how he would look good with this decision

It goes like this—- This is excellent, infact this idea gives me related thought, so if you can validate, ………………..present your idea…………….., I think this is something which comes out from what you said, it would be beneficial because …………, this thing from your idea would help us achieve……………….

Use some or part of that but I am sure “Your Boss would love this”. After all he is a human being too. He also likes to be recognized and praised for his decisions.

You do not stand to lose anything because

1. Inside his mind he would start to trust you

2. Inside his mind he would know whose idea it is

3. When he goes up the ladder he would pull you up with him.

Try it

What is your PLAN B

In a very interesting post It Doesn’t Matter If You Win or Lose Jarkko has raised a very important point If your company went down today, what would be the legacy it left behind? Just try to answer this question and believe me you would struggle to find the answer. The reason is simple- Most of us don’t have the PLAN B ready.

So what is PLAN B. Your Job, Current approach in a project, decisions, route taken etc. is you’re PLAN A. If PLAN A does not work you need an alternative. The alternative is always your PLAN B. It is important to have a backup plan available in order to take care of contingencies. Most of us don’t think about it and many of us don’t even care to believe in it. We live in a world where we think nothing can go bad with us. Things can go bad with anyone around us but they cannot even touch us.

Plan B

Plan B

When we work on project with limited resources we always have our PLAN B ready. You never know when things can go bad and need to shift to an alternative. A small company was facing a lot of problem with its Internet Service Provider. They needed a backup but maintaining two vendors were very costly. They did not wanted to change vendor too because others were no better. Their Business was suffering at times and it became more of a headache. The need of PLAN B was there and finally they got what they wanted. The company booked many Internet Café’s across the city where their employees were shifted every time the internet went down. It was a cost effective solution well within their budget. The management was relaxed because they have the PLAN B with them.

In life also we need alternatives in the form of PLAN B. What will happen if the job market deteriorates? Do we know what we would do? Keep aside luxuries are we ready even to meet our basic necessities. I am sure most of us are not. Maybe we won’t require it throughout our life. But what is the harm in even thinking about it. When you do that keep two things in mind

1) Be realistic in thoughts

2) Try to connect the plan with your Hobby

Most important is that you should think about it. Connect it with your Hobby because this would be something which will keep you excited. You don’t need to start today but a thought would definitely make you feel comfortable. Believe me, an old saying, Rome was not built in a day.
