Recently I was involved in a discussion where parents were much concerned about the way their children are being brought up in current environment. Just like every other parent they do everything for their children but still deep inside they feel something is missing and there is a gap that needs to be filled up. It seemed every parent had something which they do not like in their children and cannot do anything about. Problems may seem small from the outside but it was big for the parents. Soon I realized that probably they were thinking too much because each one of us has passed through such stage in life and have learned things from experience. Why then these parents are not allowing their children to learn on their own rather than stuffing things in their minds which they think are right for them.

 There are difference between things you hear and the things you experience on your own. Children won’t understand what is good or bad for them till the time they experience it on their own or the feeling comes from deep inside. Parents can forcibly make their children stay away from things which they think are bad but that is till the time they can keep a check on them. End result, At first opportunity the child would not hesitate to try the things from which they have been restricted in the distant past. Well this then does not mean that one should not let them tread the wrong path but it does mean that the feeling of right or wrong should come from deep inside them through their own experience or their observations. What best we can do is to make them wise enough by giving right values. Yes they need a word of caution and advice from you, whether they demand it or not, but it is your relationship which would ensure that each piece of advice is a golden nugget for them. It is where 3 valuable gifts come in to picture.

Three valuable gifts are something which I feel are most important. Invest in them and you would find your children would be much smarter than you can ever think of.

1) Time- You children need your time. Time is the biggest thing which is required for bonding parents with their children.  Having time for their questions, their problems, and working through complex situations gives children a much needed confidence about themselves. They know they have someone to fall back on and someone with whom they share a level of trust. It is this feeling inside that would never let them go wrong in life. The fear of losing on a relationship would be much more in them which would help them to seek the right things. When there is a strong bonding, there is nothing which can go wrong. The more you know about your children by spending time together, the more they would know you and would learn from you.

2) Knowledge- Buy them gifts which gives a boost to their knowledge and help them take their understanding to the next level. Reading good books is the best habit that can be inculcated in the children at the right age. Apart from reading, entertainment that is educational in nature is indirect way to help children learn new things in life. It is said that the mind that gets stretched by learning does not return to its original form ever. Help you children develop a habit to learn on their own.

3) Values- The values you give to your children stay with them throughout their life. To inculcate great values you yourself need to live through them. Yes you are their role models and how you live your life would shape the learning that they get from you. Honesty, truth, integrity etc. are scores of values which help children to be on the right track. Such values if developed in right manner help children choose what is right or wrong for them.

To sum it up, enjoy the company of the children and be their best friend. You need to be with them especially in situations when you need them most. The bonding needs an age of involvement and you need to be committed for it. The three valuable gifts would make sure that learning is right so that they face this world with great confidence.
