“Whatever the mind conceives that can be achieved”
- John Milton
Most of us get disheartened and lose our self esteem upon encountering failure. People often compare themselves with others and feel as if they are totally worthless. Thus, we often create a low self-esteem ourselves through these wrong thought processes. This starts a vicious circle of failures (due to lack of self esteem) and still lower self esteem, which will affect not only your professional life but also our personal life. Now we will see various self esteem building exercises that bring success and prosperity to our life.
1. Build a positive attitude and be optimistic always
Being optimistic is very important in today’s competitive scenario. Most of us are negative towards many things in our life. This leads to unnecessary stress in the professional sphere which makes us commit blunders. These blunders cause further stress, often leading to health problems. Your beliefs and attitude about a situation affect your reaction to it. You should recognize the negative attitude and try to replace with positive thoughts and attitude. It is not an easy task because you have to change your negative attitude step by step. But, you need to try hard to reinforce the positive attitude. This is the first of the self esteem building exercises. So, always have a positive attitude in life and be ever-optimistic.
2. Remind yourself of your achievements
In the face of failures, we often forget our true worth. In such situations, one of the best exercises you can indulge in, to help building your self esteem is to remind yourself of your past achievements. Your achievements need not be great. They may be trivial, but try to make yourself realize what you had to do in order to get something in life – what ordeals you had to go through and what sacrifices you made.
Keep telling yourself that, if you could achieve something in the past, you will definitely be able to succeed now too. This boosts your morale like nothing else.
3. Believe in yourself
Generally, people afraid of taking risk and they always tends to say I can’t do this thing. “Nothing is impossible in this world” is the famous English proverb that propels people to great achievements. So, it is important that we believe in ourselves as it one of the most important self esteem building exercises. The phrase ‘I can’ motivates peoples to think positively. Here, it would not be out of place to quote from the book “You Can Win” by Shiv Khera that:
“Winners don’t do different things
Winners do things differently”
4. Don’t underestimate yourself
If you are not able to value yourself how will others value you? Nowadays, most of the people, especially youngsters, compare themselves with others and underestimate themselves. This gives them inferiority complex. In fact, this is one of the exercises that cause a hindrance to building self esteem. Sometimes underestimating yourself can make a total loser out of you. Because of underestimating yourself, you can’t take any kind of risk in your life and also can’t achieve any goals in professional as well as in personal life, due to lack of confidence in yourself. Every person is unique and is presented with unique opportunities under different circumstances. Each person’s constraints are different. So, it is very unfair to compare yourself with others.
5. Indulge in exercises you are interested in or good at
It’s always good for you to indulge in some exercises, you are really interested than in something you don’t have interest at all. For example, if you are good at table tennis and enjoy it, make sure you play it regularly. As you are interested, you will be very good at it. Winning at some exercises instils confidence in you and helps you in building your self esteem. This confidence will also help you in other exercises and generally increase your competence.
Apart from the above mentioned exercises, that help you in building your self esteem, you can find several other simple day to day exercises that will also help you to build your self esteem. Ultimately, each person is different and what builds one person’s self esteem may not boost others’ self esteem. So, ultimately, it is up to you to judge what will work best for your self esteem.
