Appeal To Emotion To Get The Best

11 January 2010 No Comment

One of the important aspect of conversation is to convince people and make them do what you feel is best for them. The conversation can be with members of your team, your customers, vendors, or even your near and dear ones. I believe this to be not an art till the time you are clear in your thoughts and hands on with what you have to say. The fact is that People do believe in things that come from heart and have the potential to better their lives and the ones they care about.  Each individual has something distinct about him and it is this ability that gives an opportunity to appeal to their emotion and get the best out of them.

If you are managing a team or people and the onus is on you to get the best then appealing to their emotion is one of the best strategy not only to make them productive but happy too. The value in work comes not by hiring people but by making them feel highly about their work too. You can always make them sit for full eight hours but the best comes only if they give their hundred percent in those hours. Similarly you may want your child to do well in studies, encourage your wife or other relatives about the job they do, and other scenarios where you need the best from people- appealing to emotion is one of the great way to get the best out of them. Let’s talk about it more from the scenario where you have to manage a team of people and make them perform to their peak.

It is common and can be easily seen around

1) Most jobs are monotonous

2) The craze losses its charm with time

3) It becomes routine 8 hour job

The net result is that

1) Most people spend time in job just because they have to

2) Their productivity is not at their best

3) It has direct impact on the culture

In all these situations, the best way to keep your employees motivated and enthusiastic about their job is by appealing to their emotions.

And the best way to appeal to emotions is by showing them value in what they do.

1) Show value to the sales people in the job they do

2) Show value to the product people in job they do

3) Show value to the team people in projects they do.

This is simple. Let’s take an example. Let’s assume your team members is working on project for one of your customer

1) Show value by telling them how important is the work that they do.

2) How it will change the way customer do their work.

3) How it would beneficial for the company

The idea here is to appeal to their emotion and

1) Make them feel proud about their work

2) Make them responsible and accountable for their work.

3) Make them see value and benefits in what they do

Similarly this can be done with your relatives, your family etc. to get the best out of them. You can appeal to the emotion of your child to incline him more towards studies

1) By showing him value in what he study

2) By showing him benefits of getting good marks

3) By showing him how that can help him build great career.

Apart from studies sports, extra curricular activities are another areas where you can help your child participate and develop a rocking personality.

The biggest problem with us all is that instead of solving the problem we often aggravate them by working on its symptoms in wrong manner

1) We fire people when they don’t perform

2) We discourage the children

3) We always look at negatives.

Keeping all human beings as constant, it is the emotions and mindset only which drives one individual more than other.

Seek value and show value. Appealing to emotions is one of the best strategies to involve and get the best from your people. Always look at the symptoms in order to target the root of the problem. People give their best when they can relate to the work they do. Get your team to get emotionally involved in the work they do. You will get their Best.
