Be Your Own Boss

4 May 2010 2 Comments

A poster hanging at the back wall of my boss’s cabin said:

“Rule No.1 – Boss is always right.

Rule No.2 – If boss is wrong, refer Rule No. 1.”

This poster aptly summarizes what a boss and bossism is all about. You cannot question the boss. You just listen to the boss. Boss gives orders. Boss points fingers. Boss is to squeeze more out of you. Boss is to push you to the limit. Boss is to overload you. Boss is to pressurize you. Boss asks feedbacks. Boss seeks answers. Boss is hegemony. Boss shouts. Boss bullies.

The very mention of the boss puts people under pressure. The word throws up an image of an arrogant and indifferent person. Boss lacks the sense of humor. Boss never laughs. If he/she does laugh, then that it is to ridicule you. Boss enjoys insulting you in front of everyone. ‘Good boss’ is an oxymoron.

Nobody loves boss. Nobody wants a boss. Bossism is against humane spirit. Boss is the offspring of dictatorial mentality. Boss binds you and rules you. Boss kills creativity and humanity.  And that’s why boss is another four letter word. It has many negative connotations to it. If you do not want a boss and wish to be your own boss; then read on.

Start something of your own: This is the best way to be your own boss. As long as you work for others, you are bound to have a boss. If you are employed with someone else, you will be answerable to the employer or the owner. In any office you cannot enjoy the freedom of working as per you wish as you will always be working under a superior who will be your boss in the office.

If you start off something of your own, you are your own boss from the day one. Initially, there may not be anybody working under you. But then, you aren’t trying to be a boss to somebody. You want to be your own boss; and starting your own business or an enterprise is the best way to this. You will be questionable and answerable to yourself. You will no more be waiting to give feedbacks or receive orders.

Take control of your life: Bossism is not always concerned with your job. It could be happening to you in your life as well. If you follow someone else’s wishes, orders and try to please someone else other than yourself, then you are being bossed.

Take control of your life. Decide what you want and start working for your own. Try to please your self and fulfill your own dreams. Listen to your heart and follow your dream. Boss your own life for your own sake.

Plan what suits you best: In order to enjoy your own being and not getting bossed by someone else, plan to do something that suits you and your temperament well. Do not follow what others are doing. Do not try to run behind money or fame. Do something that will give you immense satisfaction.

While planning, it is important to understand your capabilities. Do also consider your weaknesses and chart out a plan that will not put you under pressure. Plan your activities so that you will have enough space for your mood swings and lazing around.

Control your resources: Understand what resources you will need in order to be your own boss. Control these resources. You may also need to seek help from other people. Do that on your own terms. Do not get bogged down by someone else’s demands. Decide the terms as per your preferences.

Financial resources are equally crucial. Create your own pool of finances. Do not depend on a person or any agency to fulfill your financial needs. Financial obligation will put you under them and you are always likely to be controlled by them.

Decide disposal of your time: Having your time all for yourself is another sign of being your own boss. Do not let your time be controlled by other people or conditions. Decide what you want to do with your own time. Do not be dictated by the circumstances. Spend your time as per your wish. Disposal of your time should be in your hands.

Schedule your day and deeds that will not put you under someone else’s mercy. You are the boss and you decide what is to be done and when.

Being your own boss gives an immense sense of freedom and happiness. But, be warned that it also takes a lot of discipline to be your own boss, lest you become lazy and incur your own loss.

While I agree that most managerial-type personnel have no clue nor care how to manage people in a way that maintains dignity and respect (at least) on both ends, the old phrase "become your own boss" in my opinion has become nothing more than empty rhetoric, reminding me of a monologue that Steve Martin gave in an old episode of SNL:

    "You could be a millionaire….first, get a million dollars…."

    Well, yes…Kris!
Though nobody wants a boss, everybody will love to be a boss. However, as the awareness about self realisation  and expectation of dignity and respect (as you mentioned that nobody knows how to manage it) are on the rise, more and more people want to break the shackles of 'bossism' and go by their own.
More and more people are opting to control their own lives and be your own boss. Being your own boss also has spiritual significance as well. It's not just physical it frees you and your mind, it also elevates you a level up. Spiritual evolution needs being free from all bondage.
