What are the benefits of authority position? A simple enough question at first hand but with a lot of connotations. First of all the definition of an authority position is a very broad one. ·        You have the last word when it comes to an important decision. This is a benefit because if it turns out that the decision was right than you can get all the praise of a job well done. Of course if it turns out bad, you can expect disgruntled subordinates who start to question your authority. The main benefit is that your faith is in your own hands. Nobody can make the final decision but you; therefore you can impose your own vision on a project with no one constraining you.

·        People look up to you as a role model. Although not everybody that holds an authority position is loved by his or her subordinates, they all are role models. They have to reflect what the work ethic of the group should be, the level of dedication, and not least of all, what the appropriate manner in which to act in every kind of situation should be.

·        You get to order people around. This is one of the most important benefits of authority position, because it’s inevitably one of our childhood dreams. Of course this kind of power over somebody else should be very delicately and tactfully handled. You should be very careful in making everyone of your subordinates feel that they are reaching their true potential by organizing their work in such a way that no one feels cheated. You shouldn’t make people feel that their work depends on your whims but that they are working as group for the good of the whole company; and it’s also very important to make everyone feel that they have some part in making the finished product. If you cover all these aspects than it won’t be so hard for you to order people around without the possibility of finding yourself with a mutiny on your hands.

·        You can get away with your own mistakes. If you are the leader of a group than it’s easier to get away with your own mistakes. This is a very important factor when it comes to benefits of authority position. Of course if a mistake was made you will be the first one who people look at because you are in charge, but on the other hand you can’t just fire yourself now can you? And in addition to not getting fired, if a mistake is made you can always blame it on a scapegoat.

·        If you hold an authority position, you hold the social status that comes with it, which is not an easy thing to come by. Everybody wants to be around a leader, and everybody wants to hear what a leader has to say. So if you have an authority position you are more likely to be invited to classy social events, and banquets of all sorts.

·        You can influence public opinion. If you are in an important position, a position of authority, you can draw attention to causes you really care about. You can make people pay attention to what you have to say because of your social status, and who of us wouldn’t want to profit form what they achieved professionally by publicly voicing their beliefs.

·        Money. If you hold an authority position you are very likely to be very well paid for it. And let’s be fair, everybody cares about the material aspect as well as the social aspect of the job.

These are just some of the benefits of authority position, but of course there are others more. It is also very important not to forget that with great power come great responsibilities, so not everybody is cut out, or even desires an authority position. Great men get to change the world by holding authority positions, but on the other hand, if great power falls into the wrong hands, unimaginable tragedies can happen, such as those caused by ruthless dictators.
