Best Television Shows In The Last Three Decades
We all enjoy television shows. They are a big part of our modern lives. Everybody has their favorites, but there are some which have had such a huge success that rightfully earn the title of best television shows ever. In recent years reality shows have been very prolific, but in the 80’s and 90’s sit-coms were the shows that attracted the biggest audiences. In this following paragraph I will tell you which are the shows I think were the best in the last three decades, based on quality, but of course, also on success. So here they are:
1. Seinfeld. My all time personal favorite. I think this is without a doubt worthy of being called one of the best television shows ever. I think it is great because it is extremely funny and more importantly it’s all about the comedy. No time is wasted with creating intricate romance stories between characters. Nothing to sentimental makes its way thru, so everything we see is schematic, superficial, and in essence pure comedy. Plus who do you know that hasn’t heard off, and fell in love with the Kramer character. I think this show is the best sit-com ever.
2. Friends. Not surprisingly, it’s another sit-com. These were some of the best television shows in the 80’s and 90’s, so it’s no wonder that at least two of them have made their way thru in this top. “Friends” has a great quality, because it has no main character. All six “friends” bring something fresh and the mix they make and how they interact is brilliant. Friends, rather than Seinfeld go for the emotional response from the audience as well, especially with the whole on and off thing going on between Rachel and Ross. Everybody has their favorite characters, but I think that the best ones and the ones that make this show so damn funny are Chandler, Phoebe, and sometimes Joey. This show is also great because it applies to guys and girls alike.
3. The Wire. One of the best made TV shows ever. It was aired on HBO, as an original show. I think the casting was great for this show, and at the same time I believe it had one of the best soundtracks of any show out there. All the characters seem to fit in the story, and all of them were well rounded, and felt very believable, having both a negative and a positive side. It’s basically a cop show but it impresses because it doesn’t seem to portray anything that isn’t true, no matter how hopeless some situations appear. Although this recipe doesn’t seem ideal for a TV show, describing the truth on the streets, with unrelenting honesty pays off for this series and it makes it one of the best television shows ever made.
4. House. House is a great TV show because it has all the basic ingredients: drama, because the action takes place in a hospital, and, as opposed to other hospital shows, isn’t afraid to show the cases that end up in tragedies; it’s got a great sarcastic and original type of humor, that comes so naturally to Hugh Laurie, the actor who plays House; it’s got a villain which paradoxically is also the hero, portrayed brilliantly again by Hugh Laurie; and it has a lot of good looking young doctors.
5. The Sopranos. For many years critics have agreed that “The Sopranos” is one of the best television shows ever produced. The recipe for this film is pretty simple because it is based on the life of a mob leader, so it has a lot in common with most of the movies that Al Pacino, or Robert de Niro have done, but it has a brilliant twist. You don’t just see the front, the face the mob leader has to put on so he keeps his position and earns the respect of the people he does business with, but you also get to see the other side. So the mob leader actually has panic attacks because of unresolved issues with his father, so he has to go see a shrink. He also has to take care of his children’s education, and he has to take care of his wife. I think turning the tables, and having a look in the domestic life of a mob boss is a brilliant idea.
These are my personal favorite TV shows. Make your own list of the best television shows so you can check it against those of your friends. I always find that a great subject of conversation. Of course, every list like this has to e subjective, and some great shows will inevitably be left out, but I think this is a great exercise. So, I can’t wait for the next great show to come along, how about you?
