Gaudi is one of the most famous architects that ever lived. Most of what Barcelona is known for to tourists around the world has been built by Gaudi. Gaudi’s style is very unique, blending organic shapes and forms with geometric precision. Although his forms seem to be placed by chance they are actually extremely well thought out, and we can see incredible structural performances in most of his buildings. It is worth pointing out that Gaudi’s works couldn’t have been completed without the help of some of the best sculptors, ceramic tiles experts, and window painters in the world. Also he had a big break when he was taken under the patronage of a very wealthy Catalonian industrialist, senior Gϋell. A lot of Gaudi’s works were paid by senior Gϋell. So here are some of the best works of Gaudi:

1.      Casa Vicens. This is his first important construction, but it can easily find its way in the best works of Gaudi. Vicens was another wealthy Catalonian industrialist, who owns a brick and ceramic tile factory. This is expresed in the main facade of the building where different colored ceramic tiles are placed in abundance forming a very lively and dynamic show of texture color and intricate patterns. This house is important because it shows in a very obvious way the main influences of Gaudi’s work. For example, the abundant use of ceramic tile is very specific to the Moorish way of decorating buildings.

2.      Palau Gϋell. This is the work that made people notice Gaudi’s talent. It also made such an impression on the Catalan tycoon Eusebi Gϋell that he would sponsor a lot of his future works. It becomes apparent in this building that Gaudi gravitates more and more towards the art nouveau movement. The architects of art nouveau put a lot of emphasis on the idea of a complete work of art. So they didn’t just have to design the building, but also the furniture, the metal work, and every other little detail. Everything had to work together and craftsmanship was extremely important. The best example for this building is represented by the front gate, which has a reptile motif, which has an amazingly intricate metal work.

3.      Casa Calvet. As almost all of was works, Casa Calvet is located in Barcelona. It can be easily categorized as one of the best works of Gaudi. It was made for the textile tycoon Calvet. Again, Gaudi feels the need to allude to the domain of business of his employer and therefore, the columns that mark the entrance in the building have a bobbin shape.

4.      Casa Batllo. Definitely one of the best works of Gaudi. For most specialists this house embodies all of the characteristics of Gaudi’s work. Organic motifs are present, from the columns shaped like bones to the wavy front facade made out of broken blue ceramic tiles, imitating the sea. Religious symbols also get intertwined with organic motifs such as the chimney that has the base shaped like a garlic clove and the top part like a cross, while the roof seems to simulate the back of a dragon, its scales being the tiles. The dragon spine is also present in the interior, forming the lateral of the internal stairs.

5.      Casa Mila. Also known as “La Pedrera”, The Quarry, is one of the best works of Gaudi and also one of the most well known. This town house seems to actually be carved out of a solid block of rock. Its interior is as spectacular, with lots of spectacular spaces that seem to swell and appear out of nowhere.

6.      La Sagrada Familia, The Church of the Holly family. Gaudy was a devout Christian, and his greatest work was meant to be La Sagrada Familia, an immense church in Barcelona. Gaudi never lived to see the project finished, works still being underway in our days, because he died prematurely. His death was abrupt; being ran over by a tram. This, his greatest work, is so elaborate, that even with the immense effort that has been made, is still some way from being finished. Parts of the original project have been changed, and modernist sculptures have appeared on some facades.

These are just some of the best works of Gaudi. I have just mentioned the buildings that are impressive in Gaudi’s portfolio, but he also designed one of the most amazing parks: Park Gϋell. One of Gaudi’s favorite materials, ceramic tiles, is used in large quantities here as well. This park draws in thousands of tourists every year. Also, Barcelona is one of the favorite destinations for tourist around the, largely due to the specific character of the city which revolves around the works of Gaudi.
