Career Search Information and Planning While You Look for Your First Job

First Job is always an important step once you have completed your Career Search Information and Planning. It’s recession time again and somehow I cannot help myself thinking about the dot com burst where job market was somehow similar. These are the times when the jobs are almost non- existent in markets and it gets difficult for even experienced people to find a job. The worse happens to people who are fresh out of the college because now they not only compete with themselves for entry level job but also with the experienced people. The situation becomes worse when you have taken a loan or have a family to look after right after completion of your studies.

I cannot help thinking at times that a Job becomes so important in life that it potentially controls the mood and thoughts of not only you but also members of your family. The agony of not even being called or considered for a job becomes so dominant that it potentially changes the complete outlook towards life. These are definitely tough times but the truth is that one has to live past these times. While the market is bad but it does not stop one from being prepared. Yes you have to live past that bad patch because success is just around the corner. It can take some time but it is not far away at all. Potentially this is your first lesson of corporate world because you will experience similar pressure in your job too. The more prepared or hands on you are, more are the chances of your climbing quickly up the ladder. Luck has its own importance but I strongly believe that Luck also helps those who are better prepared for it.

Below are some Do’s which I feel are very important for Freshers before they get a good job in hand.

1) Stay Positive- Yes this is the most important factor. Your body language is controlled by your thoughts and eventually your thoughts control your body language. If you think you cannot get something than no matter how hard you try you won’t get it. The best way to be positive is to think “I can get this and in the process I will learn some good things too”. Believe me success can come anytime and miracles do happen

2) Be Prepared- The preparation starts the moment you join the college. There is no harm in doing some study projects for companies for free. Be in touch with your seniors and try to do their projects too. Internet is a vast resource, you can potentially find a lot about the companies you target and get your act accordingly. Surf the job sites and see if some sort term projects are listed. These all things would help you to build an impressive resume.

3) Be active in college- Take part in lots of extracurricular activities. Try to be in committees like placement, seminar, alumni etc. This will help you to build network. Use LinkedIn to add people and build network.

4) Read a lot about personality development- Internet is full of resources on personality development. Fresher are usually raw and need to shape up. The sooner you start the better it would be towards the placement season.

5) Try to associate yourself with good companies- Institutes from which you have studied matters a lot. Definitely a person from IIT or IIM’s won’t have to think much but it’s not true for all. The best is to see if you can get some good projects from companies whose names attract eyes.

 6) Try to find good company for summers- Yes summer placement is as important as your final placement. One can get a job offer in the company where he has worked as a trainee. Again look for good brands here than trying to adjust yourself in your uncles company.

7) Be in touch with your seniors- You seniors matter a lot. Please understand that vacancies always exist in departments before they even come to HR. These positions needs to be filled quickly at times and referrals work best here. Your seniors may not help you today but they certainly can when an opportunity props us in their department. Also a constant touch with your teachers or placement cell can also help you because sometime a lead comes there too.

8 ) Resume- This is very important. Consult your seniors, professors etc. but make sure it looks good. If you are not getting response then it’s your resume that needs to be blamed. Careful choice of words and structure creates impact.

9) Follow up aggressively - Don’t just apply to companies, do a regular followup too. If you don’t get a job through college placement then this is something which is very important.

10) Keep Trying- Don’t sit back if you face constant failure. Success is sweet and can take some time but it would eventually come someday.

Studies are important but a correct approach is very important too. Definitely bad marks won’t help but average or good marks with impressing personality would do wonders for you. You will definitely get a job today, tomorrow or maybe in a sometime but your thoughts and your personality has to be prepared for it. Don’t let negative thoughts come to your mind and keep yourself pre-occupied. Keep learning and working on projects (Internet based projects) till the time you get a job. You have to be positive and assure your family too that things would be fine. Remember those who love you will be more concerned if you are pessimistic. A confident approach will keep mood alive in your family and more importantly within yourself. I have come across many cases where candidates have found excellent jobs whenever they have applied with an optimistic approach. Being positive does wonders to the whole journey. You will eventually get a job, so don’t worry, its just the matter of time.
