It’s hard to always get together a team you can rely on. Conflicts arise out of unexpected circumstances between team members, some people aren’t compatible with others, and other times bad communication can lead to stupid mistakes. So, understanding the right steps that need to be taken in order to get a team that works well together is essential. This is why you should always start with a strong team leader. He should have all the authority to select his or her team. He should have all the responsibility and complete control over how the team works. But exactly what are team building responsibilities? In my opinion a good team leader should be able to create a balanced team with every type of personality and skill set, with team members that complete each other; he should be able to set a standard of quality and to explain procedure; and not least he should try to create a winning mentality by letting everyone know how important they are in order to accomplish the common goal.

1.    Create a balanced team. This is one of the most important team building responsibilities. This is where it all starts. Choosing the right members of a team is essential. You should not have many strong personalities or people with the same exact skill set. You should be able to choose people that complete each other both professionally but also personality wise. It’s useless to have a team with great professionals who can’t get along with each other.

2.    Set a common goal. It is very important in any team that all the team members feel like they are an important part of the process, like their work matters as part of the bigger picture. So where does the team leader fit into all of this. What are team building responsibilities in regards to this concept? Well, a great team leader should be able to inspire his team make them always feel special and the most important part of the process, unite everybody behind a common goal.

3.    Set a standard of quality. Fewer and fewer businesses take this factor into consideration: its part of the team builder’s responsibilities to set from the beginning the benchmark of quality, what is and what isn’t acceptable as a finished product for every member of the team. If this is settled form the start than anybody who doesn’t think they can comply can opt out of the team thus saving a lot of time and energy.

4.    Explaining procedure. Another important part of team building responsibilities is represented by the ability to explain and enforce procedure. A good team leader should be able to explain the rules clearly from the beginning. At the same time he should never make any exceptions and he should always be very strict with the punishment that comes with disobeying the rules.

5.    Create cohesiveness. More than anything else the most important part of team building responsibilities comes down to uniting the group. Alleviating animosities, trying to establish activities that involve the group other than work, should all be part of a team builder’s agenda. Of course cohesion can’t be built over night in a group where people don’t know each other, but with enough patience and a lot of effort, a great team leader can create a united group.

6.    Create compatibility between the team members. This actually goes beyond the normal attributes of a team leader, but I believe that somebody in that position should have people skills and should be able to intermediate a conversation between two people that otherwise would be too shy to talk. A great team leader should act as a liaison between the members of a team at first so that they can feel at ease with each other faster.

7.    Evaluate the results. This is another point that sometimes eludes most team builders. As a team leader, you need to take responsibility for the way you created the team and keep track of its progress and its results, and at the same time you should not be afraid to change something if you think it doesn’t work wright

Team building responsibilities thus vary from being a good people person, a good judge of character and temperament, but at the same time, a very strict and fair leader. You also need to set yourself as an example for the whole team, get every team member you selected to respect you because of what you do. Team building is an art and only a few people have mastered it to perfection. I’m sure that there are many other good tips for establishing team building responsibilities but I hope the ones I have written in this article will help you in some way or another.

Working With Difficult People Made Easy

One of the most important qualities for anybody who has a job that involves teamwork is knowing how to work with difficult people. This is no easy task, and there is no surefire way you can learn to do this in a few days, but there are some tips you can try. Working with difficult people was a problem for me for a long time until I decided to do something about it. From all the techniques I have tried the following seemed to be the most effective in the most cases. The one thing you will need to remember though is that working with difficult people will always be frustrating, no matter how patient or understanding you think you are. So, here is the list of things I found works when dealing with difficult people:

1.    Listen to whatever he or she has to say. Most of the time, working with difficult people involves being a good listener. Some of these difficult people are frustrated because they feel no one notices them. That is why they feel they have to act out in all sorts of ways, especially by being insufferable. So, one of the best ways to get through to them is to just listen. But I mean really listen, not just out of politeness. This will get them to trust you and you will find it makes working with them much easier.

2.    Always keep your calm. This is extremely important when working with difficult people. Once you blow off in regards to something he or she has done than it will take a great deal of effort to make them trust you again. You need to not fall in the pattern they expect you to fall. If you get angry and start yelling difficult people will just take it that you are just like all the others who don’t understand them, and they won’t get to trust, and you will never be able to have a quiet work environment again.

3.    Explain all your decisions. When working with difficult people, one of the key elements is to not let misunderstandings occur. This is why you need to explain exhaustively all the decisions, or anything you need from somebody else in your team. Go step by step; don’t presume that the other person will know what you are talking about. Explaining everything and you will find that errors due to misunderstandings will decrease significantly. This is especially true for difficult people who have a tendency to do things their own way, if you are not specific in what you want from them.

4.    Try to include him or her in other activities outside the work environment. One of the most surefire ways you can get difficult people to be more cooperative is to try to make them feel comfortable around you, and to let them know that you bare no grudge against them even though the whole world seems to. A good way to show that you have no prejudice and you genuinely want to make an effort and be a friend towards this person is to include him or her in activities outside the workspace, such as parties, going out, seeing a movie.

5.    Let them win sometimes. You should try to let difficult people win some of the arguments you might have with them. When it is not that important and you feel like the other person feels strongly about the subject, let them win. This will make them feel better about themselves, and also will make them want to engage in conversations with you again.

6.    Never be condescending. This is one of the worst mistakes you can make when working with difficult people. If you are condescending, the other person will feel it and you will never be able to earn their trust again. It will ruin any chance you have a getting closer to that person.

7.    Have a lot of patience. This is also a key ingredient in working with difficult people. Most difficult people are just trying to get attention. The one way they know they got your attention is when you get mad. If you get mad once it just proves their tactic has worked, and will just encourage this behavior. The trick is to have a lot of patience and ignore this behavior. Sooner or later they will get bored with it and you will win.

I believe that working with difficult people is a task we all have to face sooner or later. I know that it is very frustrating to make this much of an effort just to have a quiet and productive workspace but I believe it is worth it. The tips about working with difficult people that I have presented were really helpful for me and in most cases extremely effective. I hope they work for you as well.
