Rock has managed to influence society in a way many of its founders didn’t even dream. Rock has many facets ranging from soft pop-rock to hard heavy metal. Rock forms generations of young people, thru the messages it sends, and it is a very important cultural factor that shapes the society we live in today. That is why understanding why some of the greatest rock bands had the success they had is a very important window in the mentality of a whole generation. Many think that rock had its greatest moment in Woodstock 1969, but I believe that rock has never left the spotlight since its appearance. So, here are in my opinion the greatest rock bands of all time.

1.        The Beatles: The first rock sensation that swept the globe. Four young boys from Liverpool playing their electric guitars with energy, charm and charisma. The effect they would have especially among young girl was unprecedented, and it practically invented a term we use all the time today: rock stars. The Beatles were probably the most successful band in history with incredible records, almost all of their singles making the number one spot in charts around the world. The Beatles managed to realize a brilliant combination of commercial success, and critic appraisal. The majority of their songs can be hummed by almost every person on this globe that ever listened to a radio. The band broke up when one of the leaders, John Lennon decided he had had enough. Many of the Beatles tunes are still played by the other leader of the band Sir Paul McCartney. I believe, and many music critics do as well that The Beatles were one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

2.        Pink Floyd: A British psychedelic and progressive rock band launched in the ‘60s that managed to obtain worldwide success thru their unique brand of music. Pink Floyd made a name for themselves with the elaborate and theatrical live shows they did. Experimentation was a big part of what they were trying to achieve, and they didn’t only focus on the music, but they wanted the audience to feel a full experience at their shows. One of their most recognized and also highly controversial album, The Wall was also turned into a film, which was based solely on the music. No extra dialogue was added, just images that accompanied the story behind the idea of the wall. The series of concerts based on the wall were extremely spectacular for the audiences. The concerts world start with an artificial wall being constructed as the band was playing with enormous brick props made from super-light material. At the end of the concert these bricks formed a huge wall that now separated the band from the audience. The message the music wanted to transmit was the alienation the band felt towards the audience, as it was getting bigger and bigger. Pink Floyd was one of the greatest rock bands in the world, and they managed reinvent rock during their live shows.

3.        Black Sabbath: This is considered to be the band that invented heavy metal. With a charismatic, and at the same time borderline insane front man in the person of Ozzy Osborne, Black Sabbath took England by storm in the late ‘60s. The idea behind this new brand of music was that if people would spend money on horror films to get scared, maybe they would do the same when it comes to music. So they set out to create scary music. Also the fact that almost all the members of the band worked in factories, and were surrounded day by day by heavy loud machines, certainly had an influence on their sound. Another factor that is worthy of mentioning in creating the specific heavy metal sound, was the fact that the lead guitarist had the top of his index finger from his left hand cut of in a working accident. Not giving up he melted a bit of plastic and molded it on his stump. To play the guitar properly he had to loosen the strings, and realized that the sound created by the guitar was much heavier, and resonating.

These are just a few of the bands that I think shaped rock as we know it today. For us, rock isn’t just a genre of music it is a cultural phenomenon, a way of life, for many, a medium that influences the way we think and act. Many people like to be identified only by their love for this type of music. I believe that the music of these great rock bands shall live on for generations to come. This music, I think perfectly describes the alienation that many of us feel in this society where globalization is leaving us without a cultural background.

Best Romantic Films

This article will try to make a chart of the best romantic films ever made. People generally mock this genre of films as they claim such endeavors do not contain any moral or esthetic value. I somewhat agree to this statement, but not fully. A movie which has no historical or political implications, which does not challenge you so much on an intellectual level, is often if not in the majority of cases, a feel good movie, a movie so light you consume it, you laugh a bit and then you move on. And you don’t even get chubby from it.

Romantic films can largely be divided into two big categories: romantic comedies or romantic dramas. The first kind aims to have mainly a commercial or entertaining value that is precisely why you will see these romantic comedies mostly during the summer, showcased during the same time as big action movies and superhero movies. The second type is the romantic drama which tends to be more serious and more challenging. In this top you will find some of the finest examples of both.

1.      Bridget Jones’s Diary: This is a film about a pretty desperate, quite overweight British woman in her thirties who is a complete and utter disaster job wise. This woman called Bridget Jones is also one of the most lovable heroines ever created. She is a floozy, she drinks, she swears a bit (with a certain finesse as she is a true brit), but she is a naive darling who catches the eye of one of the most stuck up heroes ever, Mr. Darcy. The contrast between them is used to great effect, the script is witty and funny and the actors are wonderful and all these are reasons for it being my number one.

2.      When Harry met Sally: Harry and Sally were not initially right for each other. They bickered, they fought, and they literally couldn’t stand each other. But time and time again they met at different times in their lives and they become quite good friends. And guess what step comes after that? Yup, that’s right. And check out the infamous dinner scene in which Meg Ryan goes all out when she fakes an orgasm to prove a point.

3.      Love, actually: This is one of the best romantic films of all time because it’s a collage of cute little love stories closely knit together which are played by the cream of the crop in British cinema. It has Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, and Colin Firth just to name a few. It’s a movie for the whole family and is best viewed at Christmas.

4.      Roman Holiday: This is a royal classic and one of the best romantic films ever made. It stars Audrey Hepburn as the playful princess and Gregory Peck as the sneaky journalist and you’ve guessed it, it is set in Rome. I could have chosen other movies with Hepburn which would have fitted just as nicely into this list like Breakfast at Tiffany’s or My Fair Lady, but somehow the innocence I found in this one seemed by far the most enchanting. The story is also charming in itself: it’s about the princess who escapes her royal routine for a short while in order to live like a typical person. Meanwhile she discovers the flavor of ice-cream, the chic in a new haircut, the mouth of truth and true love and for the rest you’re just going to have to see the picture.

5.      As good as it gets: You’ve seen Jack Nicholson in The Shinning, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Departed and many others of his piece de resistance roles. But I think this touching romantic film is also one in which he shines best. Playing Melvin, the irritated guy with OCD, he is a joy to watch and opposite Helen Hunt he pulls off a romantic lead with sincere warmth and finesse. Watch this film if you are in the mood for a good story about acceptance, change and taking care of a small puppy when you really don’t feel like it.

6.      The English Patient: A dramatic movie which is by far the saddest of the bunch, it stars Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Kristin Scott Thomas and it uses a lot of its’ fine actors potential to reach the status of cult movie. The story is a very complex one as it is taken after the novel written by Sri Lankan author Michael Ondaatje. I recommend you see the movie and read the book and I can almost guarantee you will enjoy both if you are a true fan of romance.

The last on my list of best romantic films shouldn’t come as a surprise to any of the genre fans. It is the much adored The Notebook. It’s a modern classic, the new Casablanca if you will. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams play two youngsters who fall in love with each other despite having different statuses. It is embroidered on the ancient scheme of Romeo and Juliet but it exhibits an authentic passion which is rare even in this kind of films. As for the role of this genre of films, I believe it plays a huge part in the emotional education of people as we always grab what knowledge we can from films. In this case, it is related to feeling.
