Cities You Need To See

Everybody is looking where to spend there holidays. So, what are the hot destinations for this year? What are the cities you need to see? Of course there are the traditional holiday destinations which attract millions of tourists each year, but I will try to present in the paragraphs below some wonderful cities that people don’t take into consideration. I think it is a breath of fresh air for tourists to go to a city that isn’t jam-packed with people taking pictures. So I thought that, besides the usual holiday destinations, the big western European cities, that some eastern European cities should deserve a shot. So, here is my list of cities you need to see.

1.      Barcelona. Definitely one of the cities you need to see, not only because of the splendid architecture, but also because it is one of those cities that have a certain vibe about them. You feel positive energy, people being happy, singing on the streets. It is a city full of culture that wants to prove its worth to the world, not least of all because the Spanish province of Catalonia always wanted to be autonomous and independent. Having a unique kind of city bursting with excitement, culture, and good mood, is definitely a good way to express that bid for independence.

2.      Paris. The city that every couple needs to visit. People sitting down on bridges drinking wine, looking like there are no problems in the world. Paris is more a feeling than a city. You go there to relax, to be romantic, because everything in that town seems to be pushing you toward that. The food, the wine, the language, the cultural events, the architecture, everything makes Paris one of the cities you need to see.

3.      Rome. You can’t find a city that has more history in it. If you are a big fan of the ancient cultures, than Rome is the pace to be. The roman ruins are some of the best preserved in the world. Also the number of tourists it attracts ensures that they will be well looked after in the future as well. But most of what you can see now in Rome was done in baroque. Baroque is the period and the style that Rome chose to reassert it’s dominance, strength and opulence, after a period of economic stagnation. Great architects, painters and sculptors found a safe heaven in Rome that used all the funds of the catholic church to build a new magnificent city in the baroque age.

4.      Sank Petersburg. A Russian city that gets overlooked by many travel agencies. I believe it is a splendid city and definitely one of the cities you need to see. Its architecture has the same elegance of its Italian baroque counterparts. And this is no surprise because, although the Russian empire didn’t have a strong architectural tradition, the tsar wanted to bring western culture to Russia, and, for this purpose he hired a lot of Italian architects that didn’t have much work to do after the baroque period ended.

5.      Sibiu. This is a city that is on the brink of stirring more and more interest from tourists everywhere. It is a pretty small city in Romania that has become better known in Europe after it was the European Capital of Culture in 2007. Because of this event, the city was put back on its feat and central medieval square has been restored to its former glory. This quaint little city, founded by the German population in Romania has become a well known destination for lovers of theater and jazz. To very interesting and exciting international festivals happen every year in Sibiu: The International Theater Festival, and The International Jazz festival.

6.      Sghisoara. A very interesting Romanian little town. What makes it special is the fact that it is the best preserved medieval town in Europe. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Most medieval cities have suffered a lot of changes with modernization, but due to the poor economic conditions, Sighisoara hasn’t had much modern interference in the old central part of the town. The local population managed to conserve the medieval city, which during The International Medieval Festival is incredibly vibrant, and definitely one of the cities you need to see.

Of course there are many other cities you need to see, but for me these are some of the most interesting destinations. As I said, some of these destinations aren’t on many tourist agencies lists, especially those in Romania because of the pour infrastructure, but if you can get past that I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed by what you see. So, start packing your bags, and have a nice, safe trip!
