Coping With A Breakup

If you feel you want to surround yourself with friends and relate to them – do that. Don’t restrict yourself; never put other peoples’ opinions first, act freely for once, you are entitled to that.

2.      Gather all of your partner’s belongings. When coping with a breakup you shouldn’t aim for a complete expulsion of your former partner from your life, but to succeed in putting some distance between you, you should gather all the objects he or she left behind in your apartment and store them separately for a while. Making a change in your living environment will help you except the notion sooner and prepare you to adapt.

3.      Rearrange your space. In direct connection to the former point, you should try to change your surroundings as soon as possible after the actual breakup. You can repaint your room, move the furniture around or buy new decorations. Anything new and different can set you up in a sunnier mood.

4.      Stop all communications for a while. It’s a wonderful thing remaining friends afterwards, but you can’t possibly accept that, not right away at least. Some time apart it’s healthy, learning to let go completely and stop being codependent. For this to actually take effect, you should stop calling them and writing them texts or emails and don’t meet up. The sooner you get it’s over, the sooner you will stop being emotionally attached to your former lover.

5.      Friends are a pot of gold. When coping with a breakup, who will bring you more tissues, who will tell you that you were too good for your girlfriend or boyfriend, who will hold your hand while you weep and give you a hug when you need it most? Your friends, they will be there picking up the pieces. Don’t feel embarrassed to go to them and let them know you need support. Talk to them openly and let it all out until you can distance yourself from what happened.

6.      Go out and party like it’s your last night on Earth. After getting through the rough patch (for most broken hearted individuals, the hardest time is the first 3 months, depending on how much the relationship lasted), you can indulge to some going out no strings attached. You should let yourself be loose and party: sing that karaoke, dance that Macarena and drink until you become all cheery.

7.      Start new hobbies and develop new interests. In coping with a breakup, you should try to look on the positive side – you have a lot more time to invest in yourself. Cater to your needs, the ones of the body and the ones of the mind. You can learn how to cook Thai food, start practicing yoga or start dancing, take Ikebana lessons or learn a foreign language. The world is your oyster, you can’t limit yourself to what you already know so go out there and improve yourself.

8.      Do some good. For the cleansing of the spirit and make you feel better about yourself if you feel like you’ve been beaten down by fate, maybe you should see the ones who are really suffering from troubles which are impossible to mend. Volunteer in a homeless shelter or join the Red Cross. You will actually get to help people and see what suffering is to other people.
