Creative Ideas For Recreation

The dictionary meaning of Leisure is “Freedom to choose a pastime or enjoyable activity.” And that of creativity is simply-The ability to create. With the ever increasing hectic life styles and corporate deadlines- Leisure has become a sine quo non or indispensible part of our lives. Add to it creativity and you have a sure shot combination to de-stress and revitalize your senses. While leisurely activities could range from playing with your kids, taking your dog out for a walk or just a trip with your friends- creativity is a whole different ball game. Creativity combined with leisure not only rejuvenates the senses but it also has the capability of unearthing hitherto unknown realms of your personality.

The subject of recreation has been covered exhaustively in this blog mainly because of its importance to keep the stress off.  Importance of recreation and Types of recreation were two of the topics covered earlier. Creative Ideas for recreation is an attempt that would highlight the ideas that can really help you cool your senses off.

Creativity is up to some extent inborn-(although it can be nurtured with practice also)-but essentially creativity is something that is there in all of us. Now you may question- I am not creative- I cannot even write two paragraphs or a stanza of poetry- but the fact is that you may be good at some other things which are not in vogue or that popular. Here are some creative ideas for recreation.

Unleash the Artist in you:

At some point of time or the other- we have wielded the paint brush and run riot with colours. It might have been in school or college where art classes were part of the curriculum. Some of us were good at it and some not. The important thing is that even though you were not good at it- you can imbibe them. There are plenty of books which will help you unleash your creativity. Just visit your neighbouring book or hobby store and you will find a plethora of books on how to draw anything from cars and trucks to paint water colours. These teach you step by step starting with basic shapes and help you reach the end product. All you need are a good set of pencils and a blank art book to get started.

Mozart:

If Art is not your thing- why not try your hand at a musical instrument. All of us are familiar with the serenading power of the guitar. Buy a basic one which has decent sound (you will find one between 100-200$) and take guitar lessons. You will be surprised at how much you enjoy when you learn the basics and gradually move up to regale your friends at the parties. You will soon become the toast of every social gathering.

The Bathroom Singer:

Let us admit- music is an integral part of our lives. Invariably all of us are bathroom singers.  We like to listen to our favourite songs on the way to work and on our I pods. However- it is one of the toughest creative skills to master. (To confess- I have a terrible voice). But some are natural crooners. So hone that skill. It will also help you woo your beloved!

Journaling:

The therapeutic advantages of journaling cannot be overemphasised. Journaling is different from keeping a diary. While in a diary- you just record the daily happenings in your life- journaling entails you to delve deeper and write about your goals, aspirations. It has been scientifically proven that people who record their thoughts in a journal are less stressed and more focussed. Just take a pen and a notebook and write down your thoughts. Also the best time is early morning before you leave for work. You will be surprised at how much this simple act of jotting down your thoughts every morning changes your inner self.

Start Modeling:

I am not talking about walking on the ramp! Just visit your neighboring hobby store and you will come across “do it yourself” models of everything ranging from vintage cars to airplanes. There are clubs which you can join and race your modeled car or airplane with fellow members. And also they are great as pieces of internal décor and will increase the appeal of your living room or lounge.

Give it back to the society:

Find a cause that you are passionate about- and there is no dearth of those. Volunteer for the Red Cross or teach underprivileged children. It is both creatively challenging and will give you immense satisfaction of giving back to the society.

There is direct relation between leisure and quality of life. The WHO considers leisure as essential for the correct development of the human being, and basic for his or her psychic and social balance. It has been shown that the correct enjoyment of leisure prevents disease, increases creativity and provides a better quality of life. Leisure that is a satisfactory experience has a beneficial effect that goes far beyond its own existence, affects our whole being and has an impact on other aspects of our life and our relations with our surroundings. So find a leisure activity that de-stresses you and also gets your creative juices flowing! You will be amazed at the benefits.
