Be it of a daughter, sister, wife or a mother, a woman can manage all the roles singularly as well as simultaneously equally well. The definition of a woman changes as she does a new role each time. Let us see how a woman and her roles have changed over a period of time.

Roles And Contributions Of A Woman In Earlier Times

In the earlier times, the definition of a woman has been very limited. This is, in the sense that her roles and responsibilities were limited to first, being the daughter and then being the wife and later the matriarch of the family. Endurance is one of the key strengths of being a woman. Right from her birth, a woman has endured a lot especially in the olden days. Women were suppressed and they were tortured in the name of witchcraft, sorcery and dowry customs. Women have lived their life in oppression and fear. This was the fear of getting beaten or the fear of not being able to raise their voices and sometimes even the fear of not having a say in deciding their future.

The definition of a woman in the earlier times was that they were considered nothing more than a child bearing species of human beings that has no will and wish of their own. Women who dared to raise their voices were forced to keep their opinions to themselves for the fear of a backlash from the dominant males of the society. Even today in some parts of the world, women are made to suffer in cases of sex-selective abortion and female infanticide. Instead, a girl child is now a boon to the mankind especially after the current sex ratio for 2011 – 1:01 male/female.

Changing Roles Of A Woman In Today’s Scenario

There has been a drastic change in the definition of a woman as compared to the earlier times. Today, a woman apart from being the home bird is also taking care of many responsibilities which were earlier considered to be a man’s domain. She is now, not only taking care of responsibilities in the workplace but there are few instances where she is leading a lot of men under her. Today, a woman is financially independent and takes her decisions alone without the help of a man. A woman of today is well educated and can take care of her as well as her family. She is empowered to take wise decisions herself for her benefit. Women are taking great strides in every field and have shown the men who still have regressive thinking how powerful she can be.
