Don’t State the Problem, Offer the Solution

26 March 2009 No Comment

This is classic case which happens in almost every company and within each team. It is a natural habit of people to work in compliance to their comfort factors and escalate problems without a deep thought. You often hear variety of problems and reasons for delay which practically hamper the growth.

In Job it is very important to learn and grow each day. A positive mindset with ability to crack solution goes a long way than finding problems in your current work. We get a lot of project on daily basis. These projects involve a lot of research and analysis. The projects have to be completed within stipulated timelines. The efficiency of the team and the employee depends both on quality and speed of execution. This is tough at times because each project is unique and requires different mindset to analyze and offer the solution. In this scenario we had to build a team of intelligent people with one main motive- they should be go getters and work on the problem rather than getting bogged down by it.

It has practically happened with host of employees when either they miss deadline or refuse to work citing problems in the project. The reasons are plenty and the list is endless. They always talk of why a particular thing cannot be done and even give you analysis of different scenarios. The time spent on issues is such a waste that lot of productive man hours goes into it. It is important to understand the patterns and design training around it. It is a definitive approach to help your team think and grow in right direction.

Whenever I start with new member or a group I clearly state the project, timelines and what is expected. I explain everything very slowly and take any questions that come in between. I also test them by asking several questions in order to determine their understanding. I brief them about the problems they can encounter and how to look for their solution. In end I make it a point to come to me not only with problems but with at least 2 or more solution in order to solve problem. It is important to state risk and problems to me but then it should be accompanied by a solution too.

Problems do come and there are definitely risks associated with it. So people do come and with variety of problems. At times they advocate the problem so strongly that in process they negate every solution that gets offered. In these times it becomes important to cut short the talk and ask them to get the solution. When this happens things change. Immediately an aggressive attitude gets replaced by a soft one. They start to talk slowly and at times ask for some time. But this helps. They do come back almost all the time and with definite solution. Once you get solution from them it’s important to tell them how focusing on solution helped to solve a problem and how this attitude always work.

There can be another case where team members would tell you that there is no solution at all. I take this as an opportunity to help team grow in particular direction. I use strategy of questioning and getting an answer from them only. I construct the talk in a manner where they themselves work on solution. It helps to enforce the idea and show them how to be positive. Things work and this is one of my best strategies. Team gets trained with time and you move on to take next set of problems.
