Dos And Don’ts For An Interview
Interviews! Sounds familiar? Of course! Be it formal or informal, we all have faced interviews in some point in time. Like everything else, there are some dos and don’ts for interviews as well. Since nervousness is a must for interviews and to most of us, interviews are rather scary than happy experiences, we genuinely appreciate some good pieces of advice before facing such high pressure tasks. So lets look at some Do's and Don'ts for an interview
The Do's: first of all, interviews can be so nerve wrecking at times that we forget to remember the dos and don’ts for the interview in the first place. But there are some protocols that have to be obeyed in order to save the interview from turning into a disaster and may be turn into a pleasant experience. Some of the simplest things can completely reverse the outcomes of an interview. Some of the things that must be remembered while going into an interview are given below:
· Clothing: when you are facing someone for the first time for an interview, no matter what type it is and what is going to be discussed, you should remember that the person is seeing you for the first time; your first impression is crucial and in most cases will make or break a deal. So, dress right. By right, it is not meant to overdress. For example, for a hot summer day, it’s not necessary for men to wear a complete suit. A formal dress shirt, trousers (not jeans!) and at most, a tie is good enough. Do not wear any uncomfortable cloth material which gives you unwanted itches or makes you sweat a lot. Wear something soothing in color and material that does not catch the eye. Avoid bright colors like red, acid green, violet, purple etc.
· Hair: For both men and women it is important to remember that you wear your hair in a proper manner. Do not let your bangs (for ladies and occasionally for gents as well!) distract the interviewer. It does not look good if you are busy setting your hair and your hand is always going up to your forehead.
· Accessories: you should wear a wrist watch as it shows punctuality. Do not wear any shoe that makes loud sounds when you are walking (both men and women). For ladies, do not wear any accessory that is too bright and catches attention and creates distraction.
· Timing: be on time. Try to reach the interview venue at least 15 minutes before the interview and familiarize your eyes with the surroundings. You need to give yourself some time to sit and prepare for the upcoming meeting. It is better to reach the venue and wait rather than rush at the last moment panicking.
· Behavior: do not behave as if you are pleading for a positive outcome. Act smart and confident. Give them reasons to consider your case twice. Convince them that you are eligible.
The Don’ts: as the dos are important for the interview, there are some serious don’ts that are to be avoided. Some important don’ts on the list of ‘dos and don’ts for an interview’ are given below:
· Attitude: do not give the interviewers an egoistic behavior. It’s true that you have to be confident, but that does not mean that you should be arrogant. Be polite yet smart.
· Use of hands: two of the heaviest burden during the interviews is our hands. We just don’t know what to do with them. Do not keep them on the table fumbling with objects unless your interviewer wants you to write something. Keep them together on your lap. Don’t wipe your face or touch your hair too often. Try not to scratch yourself!
· The eyes: do not keep your eyes down. While you are facing the interviewer(s), two most spontaneous media of communication are the eyes. Communicate with the people in front of you. Look them in the eye often. Let your eyes speak for you.
· Colon: it is important to keep yourself clean and presentable but what you must not do is overwhelm and take over the environment. Do not wear some colon that raises the eye brows and shrink the nose.
· Holding the nerves: do not panic. The interviewer is just another person like you. It is said that you should not be totally cold, a small amount of nervousness is needed for a good interview but let it not dominate you. If you are out of words or do not know the answer to a question, do not stammer or make a wild guess, say that you don’t know; it will cost you less.
These are some of the simple yet essential dos and don’ts for a successful interview. Remember them and go in. Good luck!
