Eco-Solutions For The Future
A very big problem that has been facing modern society is pollution and the green house effect. So, what are the eco solutions for the future? A lot of progress has been made in recent years but there is still a long way to go till we reach the desired goal. There are a lot of eco solutions available out there, and I think that there can’t be just a single solution that would revolutionize the energy industry but a correlation of all available solutions. So, this is why I have made short list of what I think the eco solutions for the future should be:
1. Ethanol. This has been a solution that is currently being implemented in some of the biggest economical powers of the world. Because it is a strategy that already is in place and we can see its first results, I believe it is one of the best eco solutions for the future. It relies on creating a kind of fuel from corn and other crops that can be used to power cars and other machines, in stead of normal gas. Ethanol is non-pollutant so, for example, in the USA farmers are awarded big subsidies for growing crops in this purpose.
2. Hydrogen fuel cell. This one of the most exciting eco solutions for the future. It is non-pollutant because when you burn hydrogen, you practically oxidize it, so what you end up with is H2O, water. The problem with this solution is the infrastructure and the cost. First of all there need to be gas stations that sell liquid hydrogen, and that involves very specialized operators and high prices. Since there are no hydrogen gas stations, no one buys hydrogen powered cars, and since there are very few cars, there are no gas stations, so the vicious circle continues. This technology has lots of potential but there needs to be a consensus to start using it at it’s full capacity which is hard to obtain
3. Photovoltaic paint. This is definitely one of the most exciting eco solutions for the future. It relies on nano-technology. Nano cells with photovoltaic capability should be introduced in the paint in which we cover our buildings. This way the energy from the sun is captured on the whole surface of the building, not only where there are solar panels, and is then transmitted to a generator who transforms this energy into electricity.
4. Plasma burnt garbage. One of the major producers of green house gases is organic garbage. As organic garbage decomposes it produces carbon dioxide and other green house gases. Trying to solve this problem of decomposing organic matter will prove to be one of the most efficient eco solutions for the future. Real progress has been made in this domain, and plasma disintegration of organic garbage seems to be the way forward. Plasma burning as opposed to regular burning uses almost no oxygen whatsoever. This way, no green house gases are formed during the burning process. All that comes out from this burning process is a very concentrated ash. This ash actually is a great fertilizer for the soil so it is an excellent way to reuse garbage.
5. Wind turbines. Creating fields of wind turbines that would generate electricity has become one of the most important policies of western countries. This is a very interesting eco solution for the future. Although this is a way of producing clean energy, it does have an impact on the ecosystem because it disrupts the normal flight pattern of many species of birds.
6. Electric cars. Electric cars have been pretty successful in recent years, a good example being the Toyota Prius. These electric cars, such as the Prius, are actually hybrids. They work both on petrol and on electric energy stored in rechargeable batteries. They have a big problem because they need to be charged for about six hours after only about six hours of driving, so that can become a hassle. As well, the manufacturing of the batteries for these cars, that involve extraction of nickel and other processes, is actually a greater polluting process than that of gas powered cars. So in the end, considering all the factors, electric cars might not be one of the best eco-solutions for the future.
These were just a few of the most exciting eco-solutions for the future that I could see working. Of course, with the evolution of science and technology, there will be a lot of advances in this field, with the public opinion in most civilized countries being very polarized towards finding a solution. With the increase of public demand for solutions, there will appear more and more political parties taking up the ecological agenda in order to gain power. This way, the voice of the people will make itself heard, thru public policies that would encourage eco solutions for the future.
