Essential Survival Techniques

I believe that everybody should know what the essential survival techniques are. Who knows when you will ever be put in a situation in which knowing essential survival techniques can make the difference between life and death. Of course we think that we will never get there because of our highly urbanized society, but as we realize what our modern world is doing to the environment, a return to a more natural way of life seems to be inevitable. So, let’s see what the basic skills you need to learn in order to be ready for anything nature can throw at you are:

1.        Finding Water: This will be your most basic need in any survival situation. It is very important that you keep your body hydrated because without water humans don’t survive for more than three days. Finding fresh drinking water depends very much on the climate and type of terrain you find yourself in, for example, at sea it is important to remember that no matter what you should never drink salt water because it will only dehydrate you more, so you should get moisture form rain water or from any fish or birds you can catch, in an arid terrain like a savannah, you should be on the look out for any kind of plants with tubercular like roots, because they contain moisture, and in a desert you should try to get moisture from the things you can eat like cactus fruit or little animals, under no circumstances should you try to carve a cactus and drink the gooey white liquid that oozes from it, because it will only do you harm. Another very important survival skill regarding water has to do with knowing how to filter it. One of the easiest ways is to do this is to get a container in which you put a layers of finer and finer gravel, sand, and some sort of permeable fabric at the bottom. This is enough in normal conditions to filter water that you wouldn’t consider drinking in normal conditions. Finding water is one of the essential survival techniques, you would need to know in an extreme situation.

2.        Finding Food: This boils down to knowing basic hunting techniques and also knowing which animals can be eaten and which are poisonous, and at the same time, a good understanding of plant species. Foraging is one of the easiest ways to obtain food. Berries are in general jam-packed with nutrients, so they would make an excellent choice for any survival situation, but this means that you have to know which to pick. Digging for plant roots is another good way of getting the energy you need from food. In any area here plants can grow you will be able to fid roots that can be eaten. Almost all kinds of fruit will be benefic in a survival situation because they are designed to be tasty and nutritious so that the plants seeds will be spread out. You need to take into consideration that eating large quantities of ripe fruit can cause diarrhea. The biggest source of protein is meat, so you need to know some basic hunting techniques. A knife is the only tool you would really need in order to survive in most environments, but if you don’t have one you can sharpen a soft rock. Use this tool to make spears, which you can use to hunt different small animals and even fish. Also, you should think of making traps, because they can be very effective. It is important to remember that fresh meat can be eaten without being cocked in extreme situations, but in order to make it easier on the stomach and prevent any risk of illness you should always boil or roast any kind of meat. Finding food is one of the essential survival techniques.

3.        Conserving Energy: You should do as much as you can in order to conserve energy, and this means that you should limit your exposure to the sun in warm climates, keep your clothes dry, in wet climates, and keep your body insulated in cold climates. You must always think twice before you take any course of action in a survival situation, because you must weigh the pros and cons of wasting energy. So you should chose carefully the time of day you decide to walk, or make sure that your body is insulate from the cold ground when you go to sleep.

I believe essential survival techniques should be taught in schools. It is a basic knowledge that we usually omit in our codependent modern society. There are still many parts of the world where these skills are tested day after day, and they make the difference between life and death. The human ingenuity and resistance is amazing when it is confronted with an extreme situation, but I believe that we shouldn’t rely solely on our instincts in order to survive, but also use the knowledge available.
