Forgiveness In The Bible


Forgiveness is a big part of our modern society, as we all encounter problems and face challenges that we need to deal with. There was not always a lot of forgiveness in the world, mainly because in the Old Testament and the teachings that made the peoples believe in only one chance.

 

Before the era of Christ, forgiveness was not in the bible and there was no such things as forgiveness in the world for example in Deuteronomy 22 verses 13:21 it shows a woman being stoned to death for sleeping with a man who was not her husband. Sounds pretty harsh but in those days these forms of punishment were very common. Jesus sought to change this by showing us that no one is perfect and that we all will fail at some point and this is how we came up with forgiveness in the bible.

 

Now I will explain more on forgiveness and the term of forgiveness in the bible:

 

1.      What is forgiveness?

Forgiveness is the term given to the act of excusing a mistake or offence that is aimed at us or is used against us. We can forgive any one for anything that they do to us, because we may do it to someone else.

 

2.      When did forgiveness come about?

Forgiveness came about in the time of Jesus Christ, for he came and taught to the people that no one is perfect like god and sometimes they will make mistakes.

 

3.       What is the procedure for forgiveness?

The procedure for forgiveness is quite simple, that the person who is seeking forgiveness and the priest will be in a room by themselves (for the privacy of the sinner) and he will be allowed to state his sins and ask god to forgive them.

 

4.      Are there any stories of forgiveness in the bible?

They are many stories of forgiveness in the bible here is a parable stated by jesus. In this parable told by Jesus a king has two sons, one son asked for his share and left the kingdom, he went off to a far-land and started to live a very lavish life, but a famine struck that part of the world and caused the young man to lose all his wealth. Because of this he had to go work to earn money, life for him got so bad that he sometimes had to eat the food that must feed the pigs. But after realizing all these things he returned to his father and asked for pardon and forgiveness from him and he was granted it.

 

5.      Is there a limit to Forgiveness in the bible?

No there has never been a set amount.

 

6.      Why do people need to be forgiven?

People need to be forgiven because we sin all the time.

 

7.      How do you get forgiveness?

A person can attain forgiveness through repentance with a priest. True forgiveness can only come about if you truly feel sorry for your sins and want to change.

 

8.      What is repentance?

Repentance is a term or act of remorse for your acts or deeds.

 

9.      Is it only a priest whom can give forgiveness?

Yes, only persons (priests) who have received the right to from the church to absolve sins can perform the task of forgiving sins in the name of Christ.

 

10. Do only church goers get this right?

No, anybody has the right to go to a priest and ask for forgiveness.

 

11. Are there set dates for forgiveness rituals?

No, they are no set dates, but for some special occasions there will be special forgiveness rituals for that moment.

 

12. Can I be turned down for forgiveness?

No you cannot, once you mean it then it is the responsibility of the priest to allow you to seek forgiveness.

 

13. Is there any other way to get forgiveness?

Yes, if you don’t want to talk to a priest about your problems, you can allow pray to god and ask for it from him.

14. If I ask for forgiveness and sin again can I go again?

You can only seek forgiveness if you truly want it, if you ask for it and don’t meant it you will not receive it.

 

15. Do different churches have different rituals?

No, they don’t. The basic ritual of forgiveness is stated by the religion and should not be deviated from, but on some serious occasions they can deviate.

 

Forgiveness in the bible is quite evident and great but its powers and significance cannot be over stated, for it carried us from a period of violence into a period of acceptance for us and everyone around us, it allows us to live in peace and harmony with each other.
