Getting Fired

11 November 2009 No Comment

This post is dedicated to one of my friend who got fired recently. It is not about his experiences but what I could learn from him. There is a clear understanding that one can derive on how job markets operate and why almost everyone is susceptible to market changes. Getting fired not because you are not required but because company cannot afford you anymore is common in worse market situation. If you happen to be a victim of any such related situation where the reason is everything except you poor performance then at some point it is bound to hurt you emotionally. Likewise, Termination or getting your services terminated is one of the worst experiences which one can get especially when you are deep in love with your job and company. But Life has to move on and so is your preparedness for such situations.

Being a top performer my friend never thought this could happen to him. The incident affected him to the core of his heart and he was completely broken. At One point he was a precious gem for the company and another moment he was no longer required. It was like one day your mother asks you to leave just because she has no food for you. Life after getting fired became worse and he was broken financially and emotionally. One part inside him always asked “Why Me” while there was other which was even more concerned about what next. It was experience for me too not because what there was a pain in his words but because I could read his mind and see the depth in his eyes.

Getting Fired

At the end of my article you would ask me if I believe in what I have written especially if it has not happened to me. My answer is simple- I don’t know but this is something I would tell myself again and again to get over the incident and move on in life (and this is something I talked with my friend who has now got a good job and repent the days he spent worrying rather than enjoying). So lets look at it more deeply.

Basically when you look at job, what is it?

1)     A contract between you and the company

2)     You do work, they pay you.

3)     You do good work; they reciprocate it by rewarding you.

When things do not work out as per agreement

1)     Either of them leaves

2)     Either of them gets fired

3)     Like a person sometimes companies do gets affected

But problem comes when

1)     You get emotionally attached

2)     The company becomes you life

3)     You eat, sleep, and drink your Job

And this is bound to happen just because

1)     It gives you money

2)     It gives you work

3)     It keeps you involved

And apart from your time you

1)     Give them everything

2)     Give the time you have for your family and children

3)     Give them your health and peace

I have seen many people

1)     Who did not saw how their children grew up

2)     Who do not know meaning of Sunday

3)     Who do not know what fun means

And it hurts, when same company to whom you dedicate everything Fires You.

1)     You are hurt because you don’t know how to cover your expenses

2)     You are hurt because there is a social stigma attached with it

3)     You are hurt because you think what others would think of it

4)     You are hurt because you miss the people and your daily routine

5)     You are hurt because you are deeply attached with everything related to your job.

It cuts like a knife

And what you can do about it? Well everything- it is you who has to do and no one else

First, Don’t get emotionally attached

1)     Remember it’s a contract

2)     You are bound by terms of contract

3)     Any moment in the company can be your last day.

Second, Be Prepared

1)     Read the signs

2)     Make yourself sellable. Keep on increasing your knowledge

3)     Always keep your options open and chart out a path for yourself

4)     Save money for rainy days

Third, If it ever happens – Control your emotions

1)     Don’t care about what people would think. They would be happier to see you broken down to the core. Don’t give them the chance

2)     Don’t let you mind wander to what will happen next. Its in your hand and the hard work you do.

3)     Don’t be a sorry figure. Be strong and always work on next plan.

Fourth, Go for Kill

1)     Use other options you have

2)     Leave no stone unturned to get a new job

3)     Don’t be shy to explore your contacts

And Lastly, Do something of your own in life

1)     That you don’t require a job

2)     That no one can fire you

3)     No one can control your life but you.

This is difficult but there is always a first step.

The fact remains that when something has happened

1)     You should move on just like life goes “on and on” forever

2)     Think of less past and more future

3)     Be strong because there are other people who look upon you for their livelihood.

These are worse times that makes or break people

You want to be a Shark or a Jelly Fish. You Decide

Getting Fired is moment in life. Conquer it. Be Prepared.

Kill instead of getting killed. This is how human race has thrived.

Fire Your Company. Get your own Job.
