Is Your Glass Full Or Empty
Knowledge is essential for growth. The only thing in our lives that never become static is knowledge. The more we get it, the more it attracts us. Right from childhood we have been conditioned to learn in a phased manner for a wholesome growth. Each element in our environment has the capability to teach something new. But how much we learn depends upon how receptive we are towards new ideas or knowledge in our life. It is entirely on human beings how open and willing they are to learn and grow. There is a constant stream of knowledge that await to surprise us with its magical powers provided we are there to experience it for real.
As we grow and acquire knowledge we become confident in our approach. Soon this confidence makes us believe in our supremacy that can either make us acquire new knowledge or put a full stop. The problem is that information is so dynamic that the moment we stop processing it, our knowledge starts to become outdated. On top of it if we have a negative attitude towards learning then we are doomed for failure. It is in this behavior lies the concept of the glass being empty or full. It is different from half full or empty because that relates more to our attitude to see things.
Let’s now get deep and see how we can enrich our life with the glass approach
There is a story on web related to a Guru. Once a king went to guru and requested him to teach new skill. The Guru took a glass and poured water in glass till it started to over flow. He poured more water and the behavior was same. Then he turned towards the follower and asked him.
1) The glass full is the knowledge you already have in your head
2) No matter how much I teach you, if your head is full you won’t be receptive towards it
3) To learn new skills first you have to keep the glass empty so that new ideas can flow in.
The approach is too true and packed with meaning. Lets us now talk about our daily lives
1) We learn new things right from childhood
2) The job and life makes us confident about certain things and areas.
3) This level makes us believe that our knowledge and experience is supreme.
And when someone try to teach us something we feel it is a waste of time.
1) We feel our Boss knows nothing and his lecture is just a waste time
2) The seminars are all useless and ways to earn money
3) The talk shows are junk and is the game of TRP’s
We just forget to realize that
1) Each person and moment teaches us something
2) These are effortless way to increase knowledge.
3) Each day there is something new and inspiring to learn from our environment.
In effect
1) Our Glass is always full
2) The knowledge always overflows rather than being absorbed
3) The level of knowledge always remains static.
To Progress in life and make inroads into alleys of learning
1) We need to be receptive to new ideas and knowledge
2) We need to look for new rather than criticize from the start
3) We need to be humble to help knowledge reach us.
This concept has another connotation too. Many times we need to unlearn what we know in order to acquire new knowledge and skills
1) Many companies hire experienced people and put them through training process
2) The training first makes them unlearn what they already know.
3) They then train people on things that they want them to know.
It is so important that we realize how knowledge fills our mind and thoughts. A positive attitude makes us create an ocean that helps us every moment of our life. Talk to any charismatic person like Richard Branson, Steve jobs etc and you would find them to be so full with knowledge and eager to learn new things.

There is no shame in learning new things and upgrading the knowledge. Infact we should treat this is an opportunity. The more humble we are, the more space gets open for knowledge to seep through. Let’s make sure not have a glass full but make the size so big that it always remain empty for new knowledge. A right attitude has the ability to shape the right and unbeatable future for us.
