What Makes A Good Team

12 January 2010 No Comment

Each individual is inherently different. So is their aspirations and outlook towards life. When these diverse set of people converge together and form a part of one group we call it as team. This is more than true if the concept gets followed more in spirit than the literal meaning of it. But this seldom happens and this is the reason that despite having the best of people in the group, the true face of the team seldom shows up. The big question that often pops up are what is a team? what is a good team work? what makes a team? And finally what makes a good team?

There are two aspects to every team- the individual aspect and the team aspect. Each individual has its own goals and growth parameters in life. In a similar fashion each team has its own goals and targets that makes vary essence of its real existence. While motivation is the biggest factor in determining the flow of individuals, its direction has a large influence in the functioning of the team too. A team loses its true meaning the moment its constituent’s starts to perform as individuals rather than part of team. And in reality the word TEAM holds a deeper meaning than the way it has been used till now in different forms. Let’s study it deeper and look at it more deeply and see what makes a good team.

So What exactly is a Team

1) A group of people with count more than one.

2) A group with a common goals and targets

3) A diverse set that has come together to achieve big.

But if we look deeply into it we see

1) Each individual to be different

2) Each individual has its own aspirations

3) Each individual gets driven by different motivations.

The real meaning of the word team comes when

1) Despite being different each individual work towards the common goals

2) The biggest motivation each individual has is the success of team rather than individual success

3) The only thing that plays in true form is team work rather than individual aspirations

This is the reason that we see

1) Some teams succeed while other fail

2) Some teams work unanimously while others emanates differences

3) Some teams are hard to beat while other fall like pack of card.

The biggest part of any team is the team work and way each individual contributes it. These are the signs that separate the good teams from bad.

The Biggest sign is seen in their attitude. The sign that comes loud and clear is

1) Do they talk as Me or Us.

2) Do they talk as my win or our win

3) Do they talk as We or My

And it shows- It shows in words, their body language, and their actions

1) The words they use that encourage each other.

2) The body language they use that motivate each other.

3) A sense of ownership to own the team destiny rather than individual success.

When body, mind, and soul of every individual combines into one for common target -that really constitutes the real and good team.

Each individual needs to feel the real spirit of the team. They need to believe that the team is much above their individual self. These are the qualities that separate the winners from losers. So whenever one has a quest on what makes a good team, the answer is simply its spirit that gets reflected more from action than words. Infuse the spirit and you have the Killer Team.
