Hostile Work Environment In The Workplace – How To Handle
If some offensive activities are going on in the workplace which is not tolerable for the staff members or employees working in that place then it is called hostile work environment in the work place. Such kind of offensive activities may include sexual harassment, abusive talks, over pressure by boss, posters and cartoons that may contain sexual content about you and in any other form which is not acceptable in general terms. Now, the question arise that in spite of having all the civil rights and laws related to any hostile work environment, how one can do all these offensive activities and even if he is doing then what are the ways to handle them.
Here, we are discussing some ways which will help in handling the hostile work environment in the workplace.
1. Maintain laws and specific policies against harassment in writing
If any organization wants to handle the hostile work environment in the workplace then it needs to find a permanent solution. And that permanent solution can only reside in writing. All the business policies and measures to handle such environment should be in writing. If they are in writing then it will be easier for anybody to file a suit against someone. This will provide a job security and a secure environment and will help in developing the trust among the employees.
2. Follow professional procedures
If in any case such hostile environment is there in the workplace then one need to take certain actions. But, this should be very clear that all such actions and procedures should be in writing and should follow the exact professional procedures so that there should be no ambiguity.
3. Provide training to handle such situations
If you think that environment is not safe enough then you can conduct training sessions for the female staff especially on how to handle the hostile work environment in the workplace. Training may include the exact steps to be taken in such situations and some physical exercise to stop in maintaining the balance of mind and body. Such activities do work in long run.
4. Facilities to complaint
This should be there in all the formal organizations. The facility of complaint should be there. There are some concepts like complaint boxes or complaint email in which all the information keeps confidential and safe. Those complaints are not exposed to anyone but necessary steps are taken on them. If there is complaint against any particular person then immediate actions are required to stop any hostile activities further.
5. Actions on complaints
By providing only the facility to complaint freely is not enough. One also needs to take certain necessary steps regarding them. Actions speak louder than words so there is no point in speaking that we will take actions. Management needs to take tough actions against such problems as it can be very serious in the near future and can even hamper the image of the company in the mind of general public.
6. Monitoring
A perfect way to keep away all such activities and in order to handle the hostile work environment in the workplace, the management needs to constantly monitor all the situations and members. Monitoring is the best way to keep away the hostile environment. Monitoring the staff will give the signals that someone is keeping an eye on them and they feel reluctant in doing anything wrong that can hamper the environment and make it dirty to survive.
7. Try to maintain healthy environment with healthy communication
Communication is the strongest medium to create healthy environment. Communication always helps in building good and cordial relations and it definitely helps in maintaining a healthy environment in the workplace. If there is healthy and cordial relation among the employees then there are very less chances that it may have any hostile environment.
By using the above mentioned methods, any organization can make itself as a harassment free or hostile free organization. These ways of handling the hostile work environment in the workplace will definitely help in keeping offensive activities away from one self and it will also help in giving a sense of security at the workplace.
