How Do You Choose Between Two Jobs

How do you choose between two jobs? Yes, this is a question that most of the people especially fresh graduates face when they suddenly enter the working world. This problem is not only common among fresh graduates. Experienced employees sometimes are offered two jobs at a time when there is a scarcity of some specific skills in an industry. My personal experience was when I had to choose between two part-time jobs in my sophomore year, I always wanted my work to be both fun and flexible and that year I was in real dilemma. I was offered two jobs which I did not prefer that much. One was to become a lab assistant and one was to assist in my teacher’s research. I always loved the lab works but I did not find the schedule flexible. Though research work was flexible but I thought it was a very serious job. So, two of my jobs had one of the two elements that I like or prefer and I could not decide which one to pick. After discussing it with my parents I ended up doing research work with my teacher because my parents thought it would be a great learning process for me. Also, later I found out that it was actually a fun job when you get truly interested in the research topic. So, when you have to choose between two jobs, take your time and talk with experienced people so that they can direct you to the right job.

Here are some tips on how to choose between two jobs:

Do a simple math: There are times when a person is offered two jobs at a time. Sometimes the job types are so similar that it becomes very difficult to choose one over another. In this case, find out the pros and cons of each job. The one which is heavy on the pros side wins! It’s a simple math and I am sure that all of you will agree with me.

Priority should come first: Salary is not the most important factor in a job for many people. For some people job place is a priority and for some the environment of the job is the main concern. So, you should figure out which one is your priority and pick the job that meets your concerns better than the other. I know that some people like to work near their homes and I fall into this group. This is why whenever I look for a job; I try to give priority to the location.

Discuss with your family: Our family is our safest haven. It is also the place for great advice! At least for me it is. I always discuss with my family whenever I need to take an important decision. So, if you feel that you do not know how to choose between two jobs then you should consult with your parents, spouse or in some cases your children. Choose the job that better suits everyone in the family.

Talk with a consultant: There are many consultancy firms these days which are very helpful. They have professionals who can help you to choose between two jobs logically. It is very common these days that corporate employees talk with many consultants when they feel they need to expand their horizon or when they do not like their jobs anymore. So, if you are having difficulty in choosing between two jobs then consultants are perfect for you.

Go with your gut feeling: May be it is old fashioned but sometimes when I cannot choose between 2 things then I go with my gut feeling. Though choosing between 2 jobs is not a simple thing but sometimes it is much easier to choose when you go with your intuition.

In this economy it is very hard to find jobs and it may come as a surprise to some people that there are even some people who have to struggle in choosing between jobs but it is true. People whose skills are rare and who have gained much experience are assets in the corporate market and they are often offered many jobs at a time. People usually use logic while selecting their jobs but sometimes logic is not enough. Our job should not be always mean of earning money or way to get ahead of life but it should be a part of our lives. This is why it is normal to take time before selecting between two jobs. So, for those people who are still thinking about how to choose between two jobs- take your time and think both rationally and emotionally before selecting the right job for you.
