How Empty Bowl Theory Makes Marketing Effective

26 May 2009 One Comment

We as Human Beings are nothing but Empty Bowls waiting to be filled up with ideas. It is this habit that makes marketing stand where it is today.  Marketing can be easy or difficult depending upon how easily you make use of this theory. Today you are being followed everywhere with sheer intensity by smart and energetic marketers. They have conquered everything in your environment and have fixed their eyes on every move. Their intention is clear, they want to exploit and fill your empty bowl. No matter how hard you try, it is repulsed by equal or more intensity to make their long lasting impact.

Leave aside marketers we use this theory even in our daily lives to profit in our business, personal or professional life. Consciously or unconsciously we use the very concept of Empty Bowls even in our everyday life for short or long term gains. Its intensity can vary but the underlying purpose always remains the same. So what exactly is empty bowl theory and how you can use this concept to your advantage?

So let’s start with what marketing is all about

1)    We have ideas or products that need to be sold

2)    we want to get popular

3)    we want to be get known and famous

And for this we need

1)    People who can believe in our idea

2)    People who can vouch for our idea

3)    People who can make it sell.

empty-bowl

On other side we as Human Beings have

1)    A habit to hunt for information or ideas

2)    When we get an idea, we process it based on our own understanding,

3)    We repackage the idea to make it our own idea

4)    Once it is our own idea, we go out and sell it to others.

It helps them Human Beings because it helps them to

1)    Feel smarter about themselves

2)    Remain updated

3)    Remain a Step Ahead

Marketer use this Tendency to fill their Empty Bowls

1)    They fill the empty bowl of human being with their own idea

2)    Since it is their (Human Being) bowl and it is now filled, it becomes their idea

3)    With their bowls filled, Human beings go and fill bowls of other people around them.

And in this Process it is the marketers that get benefitted.

Take an example of word of mouth marketing

1)    You are sold a product with great savings

2)    You feel smart about the purchase

3)    Since it is you who has taken a perfect decision

4)    You tell it to others about your greatest exploit

5)    Others then try it on their own

6)    They also feel smart about their exploit

7)    And then the chain goes ON and ON and ON
