How To Be A Good Friend – Some Thoughts

Being a good friend isn’t as easy as it sounds. People make the mistake of taking friends for granted, and don’t pay the attention they need to such a delicate subject. So what do you need to do, and what is there to learn how to be a good friend? I think that there are many aspects of the problem, but in the following paragraphs, I will try to tell you what I have learned from my experience. It won’t be anything scientific but it has worked for me so far, and maybe you can find some advice that might help you to be a better friend.

1.      Don’t take your friends for granted. This is a mistake that most people make. If you want to learn how to be a good friend than this is one of the first lessons. If you take a friend for granted than you might have a surprise and find out, form your point of view for no apparent reason, which your friend doesn’t want to be your friend anymore. You should always listen to what your friend has to say, especially his or her problems. A friend can only be a friend if they feel that you care for them.

2.      Be there for them when they need it. This is another thing that people fail to understand: you don’t have to be there for someone when it is convenient for you, but when your friend needs it. Another important element that you should keep in mind is that you shouldn’t pressure your friend into opening up when he or she is not ready. This relates to my earlier point. You should give time to your friends, not only when it is convenient, but even you feel most of all that your friend needs it and is ready to share his or her problems with you. This is a very important step in learning how to be a good friend.

3.      Make time for your friends. You can’t actually call a friend, a friend anymore if you haven’t talked with him or her for ages.  I think it is very important that you always keep in touch with the people you care about. It is very easy to get tied up in work, and think that seeing your friends is not a priority. So I think a very healthy thing to do is to make routine, something like, seeing your friends at least once a month, or as many time as your other obligations let you. This is a very important aspect of learning how to be a good friend.

4.      Do something nice for them once in a while. Let them know that you care for them and they mean a lot to you. You shooed consolidate some common memories, either thru gifts, or just by talking about them. This always brings old friends closer together. You should propose going to the places you grew up or places where you used to hang out when you were younger. Don’t let memories disappear, because they form now the basis of the relationship you have with old friends.

5.      Plan trips together. A very easy way to get back in touch with old friends and reconnect is to take trips together. Even though you have planned a holiday with your girlfriend or boyfriend, think if you couldn’t include some of your friends in this trip. It is an excellent idea if you are curious about how to be a good friend. It will probably not work the first time you ask because coordinating schedules is tougher than you think, but if you are persistent, it will work out in the end, and the rewards will be immense.

6.      Surprise your friend once in a while. Don’t let a relationship just run its course. Even if you have been friends with somebody for a long time, it is still important that you find out ways in which to surprise him or her. Try to be involved in order to make a relationship work. Come up with new ideas, new things to do, and new places to visit. Even if they aren’t very good, your friends will still appreciate the effort.

These are just a few suggestions I can dispense from my own experience. To be true the only real thing that matters if you want to know how to be a good friend is to really care about that person. The other advice I gave you will just come naturally out of this fact. So I think that being a good friend isn’t such a tough job, and there is no scientific recipe for how to do it, you just have to rely on your instinct, because that’s what made you friends in the first place.
