How To Be An Effective Salesperson


Due to the economic crisis we are currently going thru; a lot of businesses are going bankrupt. Thus the need for well trained professionals in any businesses, but especially in sales, is very substantial. Now the question is how to be an effective salesperson. Of course, there are many guidebooks, or self-help manuals that try to answer this very question, but the truth of the matter is that, even if you respect every one of these rules, it’s usually not enough. You may get to be a mediocre, or even good sales person if you try hard enough, but without the instinct for it you will never become a great sales person. This doesn’t mean that if you have the instinct for it, you will be good no matter what, a great deal of discipline and cultivating this talent is required. In essence, either way, you will have to learn the basic guidelines that every successful sales person has to know. In the following paragraphs, I will try to present some of the most important features that a sales person, has to have or grow:

 

·        You have to be sure of yourself. No sales person can ever sell anything if he is unsure of himself. No matter what you should never appear vulnerable and unprepared in front of the customer. For this you have to know everything there is to know about the product you are selling. Also you should try to think in advance what the customer will think, so you will have an answer prepared to any question he may put. If still a client surprises you, never give the impression that you were caught off your feet. Keep talking, even if you are not on the subject, and try to formulate an appropriate answer in your head. This way you will give yourself time to think. It’s better to go a little off topic till you come up with an answer, than to take a long pause. The customer will find that you weren’t prepared enough.

·        You have to know your client’s needs. You can’t achieve anything if your product isn’t what the customer is looking for. This is a very important tool if you want to know how to be an effective sales person. It’s much more difficult, although not impossible, if your customer is a bit gullible, and you are very persuasive, to sell your client a product that he doesn’t need than one that he does. For this you have to research everything you can find out about the perspective customer.

·        You have to know your clients budget. This is also part of the research you have to do, but it’s one of the most important parts. A client can’t exceed he’s budget, so try to make an offer that he can afford. Of course, selling being a negotiation, you can start by asking more than your client can afford, but only to try to get as much as you can, which will not exceed the client’s budget.

·        Try out you product. Many sales people skip this step. And it’s one of the most important if you are learning how to be an effective sales person. You can only learn everything there is to know about the product you are selling if you try it out for yourself. If you do this, there will very few questions a customer can ask you that you wouldn’t know the answer to.

·        Be honest. Since it is very rare among sales persons this can be a trait that can put you in front of the pack. Your aim is to earn the client’s trust to get future business from him as well. If you lie about a product you could get more clients in the beginning, but since none of them would return for future business, in the end this would be a losing strategy. 

·        Be clear in what you communicate to your client. This is very important if you are learning how to be an effective sales person. Your client must be able understand everything you are saying, so don’t use any technical terms, because that would just deter him.

·        Have patience. In this business patience is highly underrated. You can never be effective as a sales person if you don’t have the patience for it. 

 

These are just a few of the basic qualities a sales person has to have or learn in order to be any good. As I said, instinct is very important, but some basic guidelines have to be followed. If you are wondering how to be an effective sales person, than the tips and tricks I enumerated above should be very useful. Remember don’t despair if you can’t get it right the first time, a big part of this job boils down to experience. Wants you get your foot in the door you will find out that it’s not that hard.
