How To Change A Bad Habit


All of our habits, good or bad, they are subjective anyway, have their origin in the circumstances lived before, and is the influence of one’s observation during the formative years during childhood. How to change a bad habit can be a little difficult question to answer, unless the person who desires to change has a strong will power to bring the changes. External compulsions or forced methods can hardly be sustained without the active participation of the person seeking to change.

 

Recognizing a bad habit is prerequisite to develop the will power in one’s self is important. What if you don’t see the bad habit itself? Unfortunately one will never change at all is the answer. Ask yourself some honest questions like: Do I lie too often without a good reason? Do I smoke? Do I procrastinate often? Am I lethargic? Things like that, and if your answer is positive on all these counts, then you certainly need to take a turn for the better and find the means of how to change a bad habit. Some nagging bad habits and how to change them:

 

·        Lying too often can be really frustrating trait unless you are one of those politicians who have fine built the art of lying. Lying never pays anyway. On the contrary it can invite flak from your friends and associates. You will be soon have had made enemies, and even your truthful words will not be taken at face value. But how to change this bad habit?

o   First try and accept that you have this bad habit.

o   Accept that initially you will have to bear the brunt for speaking the truth.

o   Face the consequences for having fabricated falsehood.

o   Apologize to your victim and promise not to repeat ever again.

o   Win your victims’ confidence and stay that way for ever.

o   Finally make it a virtue.

 

·        Procrastinating on important issues, especially those that have a direct bearing on the rights of others is something that you will need to cut out immediately. Laziness or indifference to fellow human beings is often the cause for this bad habit. How to change this bad habit anyway?

o   Recognize that you have a duty toward your fellow human beings.

o   Vow to say good bye to laziness and lethargy. They don’t help you in anyway.

o   Commit yourself to being useful to the society in which you live, and honestly don’t expect to receive rewards for every little thing you are expected to do on time.

o   Keep a time table or diary and review them at the end of the day, and ask yourself if you are through your commitments. You may not have completed everything on the agenda, but you will certainly know if you are lagging behind the schedule.

 

·        Did you know that smoking harms your health more than anything else, and that every time you indulge in this bad habit you are also causing damage to those who are around you? You may ask how to change this bad habit? I made several attempts in futile; no success… Don’t despair; there are solutions, just follow the advice.

o   First recognize that smoking cause irreparable damage to your health and you need to quit this habit first and forever at least for the sake of those around you.

o   Do not get carried by those who will tell you that smoking moderately does not harm you significantly; remember it is the habit we are discussing not the harmful effects; they have long before been established to be damaging.

o   Understand that there is nothing like withdrawal symptoms and don’t use that as an excuse to continue smoking. Never buy cigarettes in packs; if at all you have to, then try buying them in one piece at a time. Going out for cigarettes every time will certainly help to cut down on smoking.

o   Replace smoking with some healthier habits like drinking fresh fruit juice or better still the fruit itself. Fruits are known to contain ingredients that help to subside the intense craving for the nicotine present in cigarettes.

 

·        How to change bad habits that are lesser evil-some? Like for example nail biting, nibbling on snack, coffee, tea, pornography, anger etc.

o   If you are one of those in the nasty habit of biting your nails, then, try rubbing a little neem oil or anything that is sure to produce a bitter taste. You will soon get off this habit. It is sure and certain, and works on kids too.

o   If you nibble too much on snack and consume large quantities of coffee or tea, then turn to chewing gums instead, of course in moderate quantities.

o   Addicted to pornography on the internet? Keep the monitor turned to a direction that others can see, so you don’t end up wasting your valuable time on them.

o   You can change a bad habit like anger by moderating your food that contains large quantities of spices, salt or sugar. You can give it a try. What have you to lose any way?
