How To Choose A Career For Yourself
Since the economic crisis, the job market has reduced. So, the issue of how to choose a career has become more important. It is pretty difficult to give specific rules when it comes to the basic principles of choosing a career, because it depends very much on the person’s skills capabilities and not least of all, his or her personality. Nevertheless, we can set up some guidelines that need to be followed if you are trying to begin and build up a career. It’s not a rigorous program that needs to be followed to the letter, and sometimes it can prove useful to cut some corners in order to get ahead, but if you follow these steps and try your best you will find that your dream job is much easier to reach.
1. Make a list of what you would want from your job and what you wouldn’t want. You will find that putting them down on paper helps you narrow things down, and gets you pointed in a certain direction. You will find out that this is necessary step when it comes to how to choose a career. Also you should write down what fields you may be interested in. You should be practical about what you write, because it won’t help you if you put down on paper only things like, a job that involves creativity, few hours of work, more than 6 months a year of paid leave and so on. Remember that it is a job none the less, and you will have to work hard to make a career out of it.
2. Find something that you like to do. From my point of view, the most important aspect when it comes to how to choose a career should be finding something that you love to do. The financial aspect is also very important, but you should keep in mind that this is the thing you will do in most of your time, so, it will be pretty hard to stay in good spirits if you choose a job you don’t like to do, and it will be even harder to make a career out of it. I don’t think that you should pay for the money you e4arn with your unhappiness. Better to find something you love to do than something that just pays more.
3. Have a positive attitude. This is something that few people do when it comes to how to choose a career. A positive attitude means that you should always be open to any kind of ideas, regardless of how farfetched they sound. It might prove that they will become the next big thing, so don’t be quick to dismiss any career opportunity. And never think that you shouldn’t try out for a job you would like because you don’t consider yourself good enough. Be optimistic and try to get any job that could give you the career you want.
4. Take into consideration your skills and education. It is much easier to get a job in the field you have trained in. So, you should make a list of all the skills you have acquired so far, and try to enrich them as much as you can, if they lead to the career you are looking for. If having any chance of getting the job you want involves having experience, then don’t be afraid to participate in courses, trainings, workshops, and internships, even if you won’t get paid. Making the first steps in any career is hard work.
5. Never be afraid to ask for help. Talk to your friend and family about your plans for the career you are thinking of. You would be surprised to find out that the ideal job you were looking for was just under your nose. Plus knowing somebody in the field you are interested in, can prove very useful when it comes to guidance in taking your first steps.
6. Make a plan for yourself that involves things like where do you see yourself in five years. You should plan your career in advance, so you can choose the job that will offer you the most opportunities for growth. This is a very important step if you are thinking how to choose a career.
These are just a few guidelines that helped me and a lot of other people to get on the right track and help answer the question how to choose a career? Every beginning is hard, so you should really think hard about what you plan to do career wise beforehand. An impulsive decision can be uninspired, but, at the same time, if you have the flair and talent for it, it could be the thing for you. It depends on what type of person you are. If you like to do things rigorously and by the book these guidelines will be of much help for you.
