How To Find The Right College
Finishing high school is one of the milestones of every person’s life. It means the end of one significant part of your life and beginning of a new part. The next big step is getting into a college and here the big question comes- how to find the right college?
There are two types of colleges; one offers two year degrees that means you can pursue an associate degree there and another offers four years bachelor’s degree. Another means of categorizing colleges is according to the ownership. Colleges can be either public or private. Public colleges are usually funded by the local or state governments thereby charges lower tuition fees for the in-state students. On the other hand private colleges charge higher tuition fees. However, both types of colleges offer financial aids for the students.
Before moving into the discussion about how to find the right college, let’s talk about the phrase “right college”. Do you really know what do people mean by right college? Do they mean only the top ranked private colleges or are there any particular parameters that would define it? Well, according to my opinion, it entirely depends on the choice of the students. Each and every college renders education but that does not mean picking any random college will be a right decision. The definition of the right college for you would depend on your preferences. Of course, there are some parameters that would tell you whether a college is right for you or not. For example, if you are a mediocre student with an ordinary result in high school, who wants to do his major on mathematics, then applying in top ranked universities will not be a right pick for you. So while finding the right college you need to keep on some certain things on mind about yourself, as in what type of student you are, your previous exam records, your aims, which subject you are going to choose for you undergraduate degree etc. If you have a precise idea about these things finding the right college would be much easier.
How To Find The Right College:
Following are some points that will help you to find the right college:
· Location of the college is the first thing you should consider. If you want to go to a college which is situated in your own sate then your search would be confined to only in-state colleges. Nevertheless, if you are ready to experiences life of other states you can look for colleges in other states as well.
· You major is the next thing you need to keep in mind while searching the right college for you. If you have already decided on a major you should look for the offers that colleges make on that major. You can start with some online research to know in detail about which college would be better for you.
· Keep your previous school record on mind. This includes your high school CGPA, SAT score, extracurricular activities etc. If you have a great academic record with straight A in almost all the subjects and have a good SAT score then you are eligible to apply in any top ranked colleges of the country. If you do not have the perfect academic record you should go for a medium ranked university which suits your requirements most.
· The next thing you need to do is making a list of your preferences that you are going to consider while narrowing down your choice. Along with location and majors this list should also include costs (including college tuition fees, living cost etc.), financial assistance, campus facilities (like laboratories, libraries etc), opportunities of extracurricular activities, social life, weather etc.
· Now do some additional research about these listed features and make a list of ten universities which match with your preferences. To know detail about these colleges you should visit the official website of these colleges. For further inquiry you can also mail to the admission office.
· When all these steps are done, you can go to visit the colleges of your list. Visiting college campuses will give you a real experience of your upcoming college life. While visiting the campuses, meet the current students, attend a class, have some snacks in the cafeteria and if possible try to spend a night in the dorm. All these will help you a lot to decide which one is the right college for you.
After completing all these steps of – “how to find a right college?” now you are ready to apply on those colleges. The number of colleges you are going to apply partly depends on your financial condition but you should apply to at least 4 to 5 colleges where you can expect to be accepted. If you get acceptance letter from more than one college, again go through your preference list and choose the one that meets your requirement most.
