How to Gain Respect in Your Team
Have you heard of email forward engine? The simple job of this engine is to receive an email and forward it to concerned destination. It is no more than a work which gets performed by your local post office. This happens in Job too. There are many managers who I have seen work in this manner. They ride on their position and seldom earn much respect. They command respect by virtue of their position but when it comes to hands on experience they just fail.
I believe a good aspect of being a manager is not only doing a good job in managing people but also to understand the work. This happens most of the times with managers hired into the position than one have organically grown inside the organization. These managers do little or no hard work to understand the kind of work being done in their team. They at times also insist team members to fall in line according to their experiences without verifying its usability.
Some jobs are very critical and every step needs a detail observation. Teams have a habit to look upon their managers for critical decisions whenever they are in doubt. An effective decision without understanding the intricacies often lead to serious problems. Such approach not only lead to failures within your team but also hatred which spread more like venom.

I have been into a situation where part of my team was given to an externally hired manager. I was assigned a new task which involved Project Management. He was considered a Pro but he did not invest even an iota of effort to understand the work done by the company. His management style was more of questioning the numbers rather than looking behind those. Team members were made to comply with decisions which in itself were destructive. The end result was a lot of noise into the system and a group of demotivated people who left no stone unturned to spoil the image of the person.
I think it makes a lot of sense to lead by example. You are of no use if you don’t know what is being talked about. Old management principal apply but there is much to learn in every new job. Some jobs are plug_and_play but some jobs are totally different. There are host of social and cultural issues which needs to be taken care of and adjustments within the team is just not easy.

I think it is important for every manager to understand the business and the work. You need to get down to the roots and understand the work in order to be effective. Team members always need a helping hand and someone to resolve the issues. The issues generally have a lot of minute details which needs to be studied before a decision can be made. There is a process that’s needs to be followed and you should know what you are talking about. Learning is the only way to grow and if you not doing that then you need a lot of introspection.
