How to Get a Job Promotion

4 April 2009 No Comment

You work for Job Growth and Money. These are the main factors which drive the fire within you and make you successful too. You cannot be really progressing in life till the time you see an action on this front. The clear indication of your job growth comes from two points

1) Promotion and Increments are true indicators of your success
2) If there is no promotion or increment then its time to think

When I wrote “it’s time to think” than in no way it means you should change your job. This is mainly because of three reasons

1) This can happen in new job too.

2) You have invested years in current job.

3) This is your best bet because you don’t need the build reputation from scratch.

If you are good but have not been recognized till now, than its time to do something extra. However you need to be sure of below points even before you start to work on this strategy.

1) You are good

2) Your company knows that you are good

3) Company is doing fine and it’s not laying off people.

4) You bear the risk and hence need to do a thorough assessment.

Before I start to tell you about strategy you need to know some more points about your company and manager. This will definitely give you some comfort

1) Company needs you like you need them

2) Your manager is a human being too

3) You manager depends more on you than you depend on him.

4) They tend to avoid talking when they know they are wrong

So the strategy has two parts. One part is what you should talk to your manager and second how to build an indirect pressure on him.

How and What to Talk

1) Talk can be casual or in a meeting depending upon the comfort factor

2) Ask How things are going

3) Tell him you expect a promotion or an increment. Be clear and be very polite.

4) Tell him how much this means to you

5) Tell him how the current position or salary is not comparable and it should be upgraded.

6) Do talk about how you have grown

7) Make sure you are serious and your face should look concerned

8 ) If there is a position vacant than use this opportunity to show how you are competent for that job.

9) Talk about someone who got promoted because of his good work and how you compare to him.

10) Don’t ever accuse your manager about his decision related to someone else promotion. This will make your manager defensive and whole plan would get flop.

11) If you don’t know how to differentiate between point 9 and 10 then forget them at all

12) If possible do tell him how something (like marriage etc) depends upon it. You need to be innovative here though.

Now once you have talked to your manager make sure to repeat much smaller version of it in next casual discussion. If the cycle of promotion is six months away then do talk early and give reminders in a months and a half. The reminder should be put in a way that it should annoy your manager. You can talk indirectly about some situation enough to give him an indication. This should be polite and in no way derogatory or accusing remarks.

Considering this being done now you need to work on building indirect pressure

1) Increase your productivity

2) Be proactive and helpful all the time

3) Talk only about work with your manager and nothing else. The moment discussion gets over leave the place

4) If possible be quite and maintain silence during all those days. Manager should be forced to notice a change in your behavior.

5) Don’t give disciplinary or any other reason to your manager. A full attendance is always good.

6) Be competitive and if possible beat your nearest competitors.

The above plan would help you a lot. This will potentially lead to following things

1) Manager would notice a change in behavior

2) He would be concerned about you and a bit worried that you should not change a job

3) He would not dare to promote someone else but you until the reasons are very strong

4) He would be under pressure not to do any injustice.

5) He would be scared that his decision should not make him less popular

6) He would also be scared to face you in case you don’t get promoted.

Try this if things not moving on your end for long time (depending upon cycle in your company). I see no harm in people talking about it with their managers. The fact is that managers do keep such employees in their mind during appraisal cycle. People who talk have much more chances to get what they want than people who do not talk. Sometimes managers are so busy that you need to open their eyes. If you lucky than at times managers do commit indirectly and in that case there is no need to build an indirect pressure. You stand to benefit either ways because

1) You have nothing to lose

2) It s a win-win situation for you. Even if you don’t get promoted then there is no need to react. You have your options open.

3) Its also works best for you because it gives good reason to move on.

Make sure you start early. Don’t talk a week or two in advance and then expect things to happen your way. Decisions get taken months before and at times managers are not able to change things at last moment. So be early.

Try it
