How To Make A Good First Impression

It’s not so easy-making an impression that is good and worth remembering. But, it is often crucial. In most cases, it is as crucial as being born. Puzzled? Why, isn’t that metaphor correct? No matter when you were born, you start to exist for someone after you have met them for the first time. So, it is very important how you make your first impression.

So, how to make a good first impression? Is there any hard and fast rule? Unfortunately, no, there isn’t any. It is only normal for the same person to make different first impressions of different success rate in front of different people. For some people, ready-wit is a gift; they can be more frank with a complete stranger than some of us can ever be with even the closest of relatives. These traits are natural and are present in very few people. But, on the positive note, such traits can be developed with thorough practice and endeavor. Since survival is awarded only to the fittest and we live in a very competitive world where one chance is all you can expect to get in order to express yourself, making a good first impression is crucial. As the relationships vary, so do these forms of first impressions. Needless to say, the same formula does not apply to all. You have to keep in mind to express yourself differently as your audience changes.

·        You have been trying to go out with this person dwelling in your dreams for so long. Finally, the day comes when you get the chance to face the person, see him/her in the eye and ask out. What should you do? Should you sound or look very demanding or desperate? No! It will only drive away the person. You need to be confident and at the same time let the person sense you interest. You cannot be too subtle; neither can you be too loud. You cannot act arrogant; neither can you be too naïve. You need to present yourself as such so that the person looks forward to knowing you even more.

·        You are facing the interview board for your dream job. You know a little mishap can create a great blunder. You are nervous (a little bit of nervousness is believed to be essential for success, so don’t worry). How do you make a noteworthy first impression? You communicate how much the job means to you, but at the same time, you do not beg for the job, you act smart, but don’t try to outsmart them. These will speak positively of you.

·        You are facing your lover’s parents for the first time. Yes, it’s an extremely important rendezvous and requires that you leave no doubts in their mind that you are the perfect choice for their child. What do you do? You convince them. How? You talk about the positive sides of you and your family; you express interest in their family. You treat them with respect while holding a bright smile on your face. You save your lover any embarrassing situation by acting witty. You express your feelings for your lover and about how you feel about the special relationship that the two of you share very graciously; you act real, without any sarcasm or show-offs. These will definitely earn you some good grades on the “parents’ day!”

·        You have agreed to arrange marriage. You are meeting your could-be spouse for the first time. What do you do? Well, this is an awkward situation for sure. What should you do now? Well, one thing that you should not do is try to act superior and render the person inferior. Don’t be obnoxious. Rather, be friendly. Talk and let the person talk. Have fun. There’s nothing to really get worried about.

As you can see, in our everyday life, we face various situations where we directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously make numerous impressions. Some of these are ignorable, and some are quite important. Some of the apparently unimportant ones dramatically turn important. For example, you came across an elderly person in your school corridor while performing some pranks and later on you find out that the person was the school chair. So, you should always be on the lookout that you do not create an otherwise embarrassing first impression on an otherwise important person. It’s not important to learn how to make a good first impression, what is important is you know when and where to make it!
