Mentor is a person who gives order or commands or is being consulted by assistants or students to do certain task. A mentor is not for one project, he is for a process. But, the million dollar question is how to mentor? Many people found themselves incapable in mentoring others but they are very capable in doing the things by their own. Knowledge transfer is important and so if the process to help others to achieve their goals. It is a relationship that form core of success of many people.

Invitation- Invite your students to sit with you while you do your work. Suppose, you are HR personnel and your job is to recruit other staff for the company and you have one assistant for whom you are a mentor. Then ask him to sit with you while you conduct interviews for other people. Ask them to note down all the new things they learn apart from theoretical knowledge. As a mentor, you have to provide assistance to your subordinates or students. You can help them in doing their work by guiding them how to do it. You can even make available all the necessary resources that may require facilitating that task. In this way, you can also improve your skills of how to mentor. Mentoring is a tough task but if you provide assistance that is useful to them then it becomes a quiet easier process. You can provide assistance in the form of other junior members under them or by helping them by providing various resources to facilitate the work.

 

Delegating responsibilities- If we talk about how to mentor then delegating responsibilities is the best option. Try to give them responsibilities according to their capabilities. When we delegate some authorities to the juniors then it gives them a sense of responsibility and they will perform the task with more efficiency and dedication. By delegating the authorities, they have the feeling that you like them and you think they are responsible enough to handle that task and that’s why they try to give even more efforts than what is required.

 

Appraisals- A good mentor has to appraise their assistants so that the level of confidence and enthusiasm can be maintained in the system. But, this does not mean that they should not criticize them on being wrong or committing any blunder. Strict behavior is also very important. Appraisal is the way by which you can enter in anybody’s heart and can take any kind of work out of them. There are many appraisal techniques like 360 degree appraisal and balance score card which will help in appraising the subordinates and will give them a reward of their performance.
