How Tough Questions And Assignments can give you Quick Recognition
"I am busy for a week, you can talk to me after that” seems to be common answer whenever a new work comes to us. We have a predefined set of tasks and our timesheets are always full of similar looking entries. There is definitely nothing bad in this considering your job gets done nicely and there is no room for error. The company is happy that an operation gets nicely handled and they can worry least about it. Things are nice and fine with life going as usual. But suddenly a feeling of uneasiness starts creeping inside you. You discuss it over a drink with your friends and during discussion you realize that you are not growing in your company. Both the increment and growth is normal and it seems the life has come to a standstill. The tasks have become monotonous and you have gone way deep into your comfort zone. You now start to crib and talk bad about people who seem to be rising much faster than you.
A similar experience can be heard from people who are working in company with thousands of other people and share the similar job profile. It’s more of a industrial set up where people work as machines and each part is responsible for its own output. The realization here also comes quickly and it seems impossible to rise above other because there is always someone better than you. This jinx needs to be broken and that too with style. Yes you can be the one who can rise much quickly than others and that too with respect and dignity. The secret is not in cheapest of methods but in an experience which will make you wise. The secret is “To come out of your comfort zone and stand for the toughest job”. The opportunities are there in your company and infact there is no taker for it. Experience has shown that recognition does not come to things which are obvious but to things which are different.

People have learned it the hard way but now they are glad that they did. The story below will emphasize it more clearly “There was a time when I was working for 8 months in a company and was happy with my work. However at same time I knew where I stood and how it’s very difficult for me to get promoted even in normal timeframe. The relation with Boss was ok but it was not great. Things were fine all these months than suddenly one day I got victim of cheap politics. I was assigned the job which no one wanted to do and I was picked up as the only person. The message was clear- either do it or leave the company. It seemed to me that I was chosen to be kicked off and this assignment was just an excuse.
The job was tough and people used to literally escape even at the mention of it. The job was important and so was the money. I made lots of plea to my boss but it all fell into deaf ear. I was told to start immediately and all other work was taken away from me. I started working on it and it was more challenging than what I had heard of it. However after a week I started to get comfortable with it. Another week passed and I was working fine w.r.t . Quality but my numbers was low. I was called by my manager and she told me to increase the numbers. I was angry but the job was more important. I slowly increased the numbers and tried to work smartly. Things started to become good when my numbers was being circulated to top management. After approximately two months my Boss came to me and told me that I was doing a good job and everyone is very happy. The management was happy that the company had made a progress in that front. My boss got accolades for it but now she knew that it’s because of me. Suddenly I was considered top performer in the company.
People from many groups started coming to me whenever they had conceptual queries. The trainer started consulting me while building the manual. My calendar started to get full and I was assigned a small team. Finally I got promotion above those people who were much senior to me. I suddenly knew the trick and picked up some assignments which no one was willing to do. I started to excel in every such assignment and got instant recognition.
The two good things that I learned on the way was
1) Pick up the job which no one wants to do
2) All jobs are easy provided you have a positive mindset. I was considered energetic, fast and person who can be trusted. “
Things are not much difficult as they are made out to be. But the opportunity is that they are different and carry large weightage. There are many things that can be learned but my focus was mainly on the how difficult assignments can get you instant recognition. These are like the boosters available which when taken at right time and with right attitude will take you far ahead in your career. Try this approach and you won’t ever repent it.
