Interesting Recent Scientific Breakthroughs

Our modern world revolves around scientific breakthroughs. Every appliance and or gadget or machine we now take for granted are the result of a scientific breakthrough. We are now living in the golden age of science. Enormous progress has been made in the last century, more than anything humanity has ever known, and now we are ripping the benefits. So we should try and see what the future holds for us, what is the next great thing science will give us in the coming years. In this sense, I have compiled a list of scientific breakthroughs that have already occurred, and are waiting to be put in practice.

1.      Quantum computers. This is a very exciting discovery that has enormous potential. The information processed by this kind of computers will be hugely superior to any computer ever invented. In fact a small quantum computer the size of a pocketbook should much more powerful than a classic computer the size of the entire Universe. This is because quantum computers rely on quantum mechanics, which is a very weird form of physics. In quantum mechanics a particle can be in two places at once, and this has been scientifically proven. So what the quantum computer does is to exploit this property. Thus, where in a normal computer a bit can represent either a one or a zero, a quantum computer bit can represent one and zero at the same time. Continuing that logic we soon find ourselves with an exponential growth when it comes to the amount of information this type of computer can process.  The problem now is to make quantum computers accessible. The science behind these computers is amazing, but there is still a long way to go because manipulating this kind of quantum bits is a very difficult job, and even the tiniest intrusion, such as a wondering electron, can make things almost impossible. It is a great scientific breakthrough, which we will ripe the benefits in the years to com.

2.      A breakthrough has been made recently because of the constant need for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.  Green energy is something that scientists all over the world are looking for and there have been a number of scientific breakthroughs in the recent years. The most promising seems to depend on nanotechnology. Its basis is the incorporation of photovoltaic cells designed with the help of nanotechnology, in paint. Therefore, paint will basically become ea giant solar panel. The energy harvested by these cells can be transmitted to a generator, and that’s how something we take for granted, like paint can become the way forward in eco-technology. If buildings would start to be covered in this kind of paint, than the greenhouse emission would drop drastically by about 40%.

3.      Another scientific breakthrough that I think will revolutionize the way we live our lives is based on sensors built in cars that would make crashes and accidents practically impossible. These sensors will be able to recognize a potential danger and will act on your behalf before it is too late. Crashes happen because the drivers can’t react fast enough to a situation that occurs in an instant. These sensors will make the decision for you, and even if you have your foot on the accelerator, if they detect danger, the breaks will be automatically switched on.  In a distant future every car will be built with these sensors in mind, and so they will be able to communicate between them and make accidents a thing of the past.

4.      A very interesting study that I read recently talks about a dramatic reduction in old age symptoms just by changing your impression of yourself. For this experiment, a group of old people, that haven’t been on their own for a long while, but instead have been cared by, by others, were left to live without any assistance on they own for a week.  The experiment started as soon as they got of the buss, when they had to carry whichever way they can their own luggage. They had to cook for themselves, clean up after themselves, and generally be completely independent. This had a remarkable effect on them.  After years of being told that they can’t do this or that, just the change of mentality had increased, within a week their motor functions by 20%, their dexterity by 16%, and their cognitive ability by 11%,. The results where spectacular and I think this is a real scientific breakthrough when it comes to dealing with old age.

These are just some recent scientific breakthroughs. Of course there are thousands of new discoveries being made every day, so the next big thing is just around the corner. For me, these were just a few that caught my eye. I think science and technology is what makes our society so great. We can’t imagine a world without cars and all the machines and gadgets that make our lives easier.
