Interior Design Tips

I’m sure a lot of you out there are wondering how to redecorate your house. You spend a big portion of your time in your house so it is very important that you feel comfortable. But there are a few interior design tips you must take into consideration before you start work. Of course everyone has their own style and their own ideas when it comes to decorating, but I think there are some basic, fundamental rules you have to take into consideration before you start work. In the paragraphs below I will try to give you a few tips, so you can make your house look great.

1.      Light. Light is very important. Natural sun light is the first thing you need to take into consideration when you are thinking of redecorating. So one of the best interior design tips is that you must take into account, your geographical location. Many people think that geographic position has nothing to do with interior design but they are wrong. First of all because geographic position influences what kind of light you have in your house. For example, In Great Britain, the weather is mostly rainy, and the light that comes into the house isn’t very bright and it has a grayish tinge. On the other hand, a house in Southern France will have brilliant warm yellow light. This affects a lot how the interior design scheme works, because some colors that you see in show work brilliantly in the South of France, but will look horrible in the natural light of the UK.

2.      Orientation. This has again something to do with natural sunlight. Specific rooms should have specific orientation. So you should think again before trying to turn a north facing room into a bedroom for example. Another great interior design tip is to always make sure that every room has the specific kind of natural light it needs, for its specific function. So, a bedroom should have east facing windows, so the sun will shine on them in the mornings, a living room should have windows facing vest, for light in the afternoon, while a study or a studio should have light from the north, because that kind of light remains constant throughout the day, while a garden should be bathe in light, and therefore should face south.

3.      Artificial lighting. Many people get confused when they see lighting schemes, but once you know the basics they aren’t so hard to understand. First of all you should remember that no kind of artificial light will come close to natural light so do whatever you can to maximize natural sunlight. If you only have a small window in a room don’t clutter it up with a curtain, unless it is south facing. If you have a north facing window, make sure that the floor surface is shiny so more light can be reflected into the room. So my interior design tips for artificial light: Remember that there are three   layers of lighting: general lighting, functional lightning, such as lamps for reading, and emphasis lighting, this is usually floor lighting, to put a specific piece of furniture, or something you think is worth the effort, in spotlight. Another tip would be to give up on the single light bulb general lighting source in the middle of the room. It creates a very unpleasant light. Try going for spotlights all around the room or for a light source with multiple and directional light bulbs. This way the shadows will be less harsh, and the light dissipated.

4.      Proportions. Proportions are very important when it comes to how pleasant a space feels. If you don’t like the proportions of your room there are a few interior design tips that can help you. First of all if you think your ceiling is too low, and it seems to weigh down on you, paint the walls with vertical stripes. This tricks the eye by making it move along the lines, so the room feels taller. The same is true for horizontal stripes if you want a wall to seem bigger. Color has a similar effect. A bright warm color always makes a wall feel closer to you, so the room feels smaller, while a paler cooler color makes it recede into the background.

There are many other interior design tips and tricks but I think these are some of the most important. Also you have to remember to be organized when it comes to designing your new room. For example, it can prove very useful to collect anything you would like to see and feel in the new room on a design board. Anything goes, from textures, to patterns, materials, color, furniture style, which you can get from any magazine. I hope my advice was of some help, and remember, if anything goes wrong, blue works with everything.
