Leadership Training Activities
Good leadership can make the difference between a company which manages to stay afloat and a company that’s wildly successful. The problem is that good leaders are hard to come by. One of the best solutions for this problem is promoting from within. But for that you need to be able to enforce leadership training activities. If you can do that than, and if you are able to spot which employees have a talent for leadership you will be on your way towards having a successful business. Most of the leadership training activities which you will be able to introduce in the workplace require a specialist consultant who can interpret how your chosen employees react to the leadership training activities. From my experience, this consultant is the key so I don’t think you should skimp on the money when looking for the best in the field. If you try a more hands on approach, as is usually the case in small businesses and you don’t hire a consultant getting the results you hope for is pretty improbable. Still, there are some leadership training activities which you can try in order to see who has this talent form your employees.
1. Going mountain hiking. This is one of the best leadership training activities because it will inevitably show who will become the leader of a group. This is because it takes a lot of organizational talent, from choosing who to take what, planning the route, the stops and of course the camping site. Someone will inevitably have to step up to make these decisions, and so you will be able to promote a leader who has proven himself form the group.
2. Leadership vocabulary. Another way you can identify a leader in your team is by the vocabulary he uses. If he manages to be assertive without sounding cold, than that is your best man for a leadership position. At the same time being able to subtly change someone’s vocabulary will make him a much better leader. What do I mean? Try using the word problem in a sentence. Now change it with challenge. You can sense there is a big difference. The difference between something that is solvable and something that isn’t. Leaders should always use challenge, and that is why changing the vocabulary is one of the essential leadership training activities.
3. Focus on the positive. Another of the very important leadership training activities that you should enforce in your business is positive thinking. This is one of the tasks you should make every candidate for a leadership job do. Instead of employees always being afraid that the team leader will always keep an eye on them and whenever they make a mistake they will jump on the opportunity to criticize them; make your team leaders focus on the positive and always acknowledge and praise whenever an employee has done something good.
4. A good leader should not solve everybody’s problems. One of the best leadership training activities you can try in a small business is to throw one of your team leaders a problem that they don’t have the knowledge to solve; coming from the team he leads. A mediocre leader will try to come up with a brilliant solution even though he has no in depth knowledge of the problem. If he is not a genius, it will most likely end badly. A great leader will admit that he can’t fix the problem but at the same time he will assure the team that he has the utmost confidence that they will be able to come up with something. A great leader empowers his co-workers and doesn’t solve everybody’s problems.
5. Body language. One of the hardest things to each, but at the same time something that you can look out for when you are searching for leadership talent. There are thousands of tips you can try in order to have the body language of a leader but the truth is that you either have it or you don’t. A good leader will have an innate body language. If you try to train it than all the focus will be on what his body language is saying and not what he is actually saying. And that doesn’t benefit anybody.
These are some of the most effective leadership training activities that I have tried and which have produced great results. I believe that leaders are born that way, but at the same time, only a few of them are really aware of their potential. This is why I believe that leadership training activities should be implemented in every business so that the right people get to be in the jobs that involve a lot of responsibility. That is for me the key to a successful business.
