Mental Benefits Of Exercise

Today exercise is no more considered as the source of physical fitness only, but also psychological happiness and health. Along with building a strong body, there is no doubt that the mental benefits of exercises (both heavy and light) are several. You do not have to spend hours in the gym to have a healthy mind but even short exercises for about 10 minutes can help in energizing and refreshing your mind.

Exercises of any form will help you to become physically and emotionally stronger person but there are some exercises that directly focus on our mind. For example, Yoga and Tai Chi use mind to profoundly concentrate on the exercise which generates calmness. These exercises are also known as various forms of Meditation. Now you can ask how exercise can give better mental health.

Well to explain briefly, like any other muscle in our body, brain needs to be fine tuned for better functioning. It needs large amounts of oxygen to continue proper function and if the blood flow decreases we suffer from psychological decline. When we exercise, it increases the blood flow and provides the needed oxygen to brain. So, you can understand how important exercise is for maintaining proper mental health and how beneficial it is for our mental health.

Some crucial factors of the mental benefits from exercise are discussed here:

·        It has been seen from various studies that greater motion help the body to produce better brain workability, critical thinking, memory ability or even balanced mood. For example, exercise enhances the release of body’s natural painkillers Endorphins that create a sense of happiness and keeps us in a positive mood.

·        Another mental benefit of exercises is that it makes your personality stronger. Though it is hard to find the relationship between the two but if you have an active lifestyle, you will see that you are more self-confident and sure of yourself. Exercise keeps you in discipline. Gym is a great place for networking and relaxation. Those who go to the gym regularly get the chance to meet different people without even trying or logging into facebook! If you cannot afford to go to gym then go to the parks. Outdoor exercises will give you the chance to enjoy the beauty of the nature and keep your mind away from the stress of your life. So, there is no better medicine for your mental benefit but exercise.

·        How do you get rid of your anger or frustration? Do not yell upon your family members or subordinates. Punch some bags, do some weight lifting or just keep running until you feel exhausted. This is a great source of expressing your negative emotions. Exercise keeps your mind away from these things and energizes your brain to fight your battles. To get better mental benefit from exercise you have to think of it as a joyful task like playing games. If you think of it as a ‘must’ daily activity then you will not get the full pleasure out of it. So, do not think much about the burning calories or how many miles you ran this week. Just do it out of enjoyment and the result will be surprising.

·        Those who exercise can sleep better which works as an automatic therapy for depression. During sleep your bran repairs itself but for that you need to give your brain sufficient time which you cannot get from irregular sleep. Exercise makes your body tired so that you can fall into a deep sleep and you brain can repair its cells.

·        It has been seen from experiments that exercises reduces mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Exercises focused on brain like Meditation gives you tranquility of mind and gives your brain rest from the chaos of surroundings. Not only you can keep your attention focused by meditation but it also helps reducing mental illness like anxiety disorders. If you have a problem in concentrating at work or managing your anger, meditation is your solution.

So it is very evident that metal benefits of exercise are able to solve your personal life problem as well.

If I some up all the mental benefits of exercise it comes down to one thing only- it makes you feel good about yourself. Now what can be more valuable than a happy and healthy life? Most of us spend our life time searching for a ‘perfect’ life but life can only be perfect if YOU are perfect. Do not stop yourself from doing exercise even if you can not manage time from your busy schedule. At least do some light exercises during your lunch break than sitting the entire time with your colleagues or walk your way home from office but do not stop it. Make it a habit, not a task. Make it a part of your life because the mental benefits of exercise are bigger than you can imagine.
