Movies You Must See
Each of us has personal preferences when it comes to music, books and movies. Some of us like things which are more artsy and others love great samples of modern entertainment. On the other hand, people might choose these cultural products according to their moods and particular dispositions.
But in every form of art there are some favorites which stand the test of time and somehow manage to please both crowds – the elitist junkies and the popcorn audiences. In film, the situation is the same so here is a list of the basics entitled suggestively movies you must see.
1. Casablanca. This is the most famous and the most quoted movie in the history of film making and it should be the first in the bunch of movies you must see. It has the gorgeous Ingrid Bergman in it and the most debonair male lead, Humphrey Bogart. It has everything you would ever want in a classic masterpiece: great sets and camera work, real powerful acting and a screenplay which mixes drama, action and humor to make the most effective gem.
2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The next stop on your guide of essential movies is this ol’ spaghetti western which incidentally also represents the epiphany of the genre. Directed by Sergio Leone and with music written by legendary composer Ennio Morricone, this movie keeps you on your toes until the final confrontation. It is probably the movie in which Clint Eastwood utters the fewest words, but his clenched look and Ugly’s capital quirky humor (this brilliant character is the jewel of the movie all thanks to Eli Wallach brilliant performance) make this a fun educational viewing.
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. At number three can be located the most awkward movie on this list. A film about voluntary memory loss and very stubborn love, which mixes in the absurd with the bland reality of our everyday lives, its’ most prized feature remains the way it was put together. Michel Goundry’s ways of rendering how the human mind works are simultaneously strange, rich and amazingly plausible. On the other hand, the casting is perfect: with Kate Winslet as the loud mouthed eccentric Clementine and Jim Carrey as the shy and proper Joel (it’s an unusual role for Carrey, but it’s one of his best nonetheless) and Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Woods and Tom Wilkinson complete the array of stars. Consider it as a must see if you are into quirky stories and messed up romantic character.
4. When Harry met Sally. On the list of the movies you must see is the cleverest romantic comedy of all time. Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as the couple who become friends out of enemies and lovers out of friends, it’s deliciously funny and sassy and it includes that miming of the orgasm scene which everyone seems to remember.
5. The Full Monty. A British film about men out of work turned amateur stripers, this piece of work manages to entertain the hell out of you and still be an educative family movie, in spite of its’ naughty subject.
6. Psycho. One of the movies you must see is this excellent thriller made by Hitchcock in 1960. It shows how a disturbed boy with a mommy complex can transcend from innocent taxidermist to dangerous schizophrenic in just a few unpredictable moves. The movie also contains one of the most overlooked, but amazing performances ever in Anthony Perkins’s portrayal of the naive killer maniac.
7. Some Like it hot. A film which truly has more humor, sex appeal and star power than any normal human being can handle, it combines drag comedy with gangster spoofs and excels in getting the best out of Marilyn Monroe’s charm. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon are also absolutely hilarious as runaway musicians who have to dress as ladies and beat their contenders off with a stick.
8. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. If you haven’t seen this twelve hour endeavor yet, you definitely should. An adaptation of Tolkien’s alternative mythology novels, this tremendous epic combines elf stories with dynamic war sequences. It presents a unique mission whose finality is not in the finding or in the building of something, but in the destruction of something and during this quest the film introduces to the viewer a bunch of absolutely loveable characters.
And the final pick on today’s list is…The Usual Suspects! A line up of crooks. A police interview with a gimp. And Keiser Shoze, the fearsome mobster who nobody knows what he looks like because nobody ever lived to provide his description. This powerhouse film is on the list of the movies you must see as it succeeds as a character piece, as a smart action flick and has, on occasion, sparks of unique dark humor. And you’ll just want to stick until the end to find out whom, to see if your suspicions are confirmed and indeed you know who really is… Keiser Shoze.
These were the films you should see right away if you haven’t yet, of course there are many more…
