Our Deepest Fears – How To Face Them
Before we dig deeper into ourselves and find out what are our deepest fears, let us first understand what fear is. Biologically speaking, when a person undergoes fear, certain areas in his brain such as the hypothalamus are instantly activated and control the first physical response to fear. There is a rush of chemicals such as adrenaline and the body releases a stress hormone called cortisol into the blood stream. This causes certain typical responses while experiencing fear such as rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, sharpening of senses and dilation of pupils. But there are certain fears which are deep rooted and are our deepest fears. We do not have the above mentioned reactions all the time but these fears leave our souls shaken to its very depth. Below mentioned are some of our deepest fears.
Fear of Death
This can be classified as one of our deepest fears. The most eternal truth of life is that we all have to die someday or the other and we all know it. Still we want to live longer. We even hate to think that our sons and daughters, mother and father everyone would die one day. We love each other so much that the thought of mere separation brings tears in our eyes and depress us. This fear is ingrained in us and we shiver at the thought of being dead. To overcome this fear is a little too much to expect. Relaxation and believing that souls never die may help.
Loss of Love
This is also one of our deepest fears and is somewhat related to the above mentioned. Loss of one’s love either by death or just by separation is such a painful thought that we all fear from it. Thinking about leading our lives without our beloved is a little difficult for us. Love, marriage and commitment make the bond so strong that it is impossible to think otherwise. Loss of a person whom we have loved dearly makes the world colorless for us. In extreme cases, people think that their mere existence has become sordid enough to end it.
Fear of Heights
This is a well-known and an extremely common fear out of our deepest fears. It is wrongly termed as ‘vertigo’. Vertigo is similar but not same. The fear of heights is called acrophobia and is triggered even at a small height. What many of us suffer is vertigo which is the sense of the whole world spinning around us. Amongst its other symptoms are dizziness, giddiness and our stomach churning. This is mostly rectified when we visit heightened places repeatedly. Over a period of time, our minds get used to the distance and sense of being at a height. Temporarily one might attempt to listen to music or find some other ways of diverting one’s attention from those dizzying heights.
Cramped Spaces
Popularly known as ‘claustrophobia’, fear of cramped spaces can lead to suffocation and even blackout. Being one of our deepest fears, people who suffer from it say that they feel as if something heavy is on their chest and they cannot breathe. However, this is a misconception. Claustrophobia is the fear experienced in cramped places and not the fear of cramped places. People suffering from the fear in cramped places often avoid traveling in elevators or even entering low roof houses. To overcome this fear, one has to understand the fear, stay calm and think rationally.
Human mind has great strengths and abilities. Sometimes, it can achieve what other may have labeled as ‘not possible’. Overcoming such fears is possible. People who have done it can tell how difficult it is to take the first step. And then it is easy. Overcoming our greatest fears is like turning them into our strengths. Do not stop living your life because of these fears but instead go out and fight your fears. Talk to a therapist or a counselor about your fears and how they prevent you from enjoying the normal course of your life. Most important our greatest fears need to be faced head on for us to get rid of them forever. Sometimes panic attacks get triggered in the situations perceived to be dangerous. Be calm and composed.
