A mention of word fear is blow to our ego and self esteem. It either throws up a challenge or makes us look like a coward. But it is all in our mind. People who have acknowledged fear are better prepared to lead a successful life than those who have ignored the existence of it. As an example – Most of us want to be our own boss but few dare to work out the path of their own by overcoming the fear of loss of social status and comfort of life. Yes this involves risk but how many of us are willing to take even the first step.
This post is about the game plan to help you overcome fear and achieve the best results in your life. These are 5 practical hacks which will help you to unravel the true face of fear. The existence of the fear is upto some extent only beyond which success is not too far away. Choose any one of the 5 ways as per the need and you would find them to be your friends in real tough situations. Let’s start with the first one
1) See The Opportunity- The first face of the fear is the opportunity hidden behind it. Taken an example- There are people who avoid meeting other people and are even scared to talk to them. The biggest fear inside them is inability to initiate conversation and the thoughts of looking dumb in front of them. These are the people who fail to recognize the opportunity that lies behind knowing more people and extending their social circle. On similar lines there are people who would not like to acquire a new skill just because they are too lazy and develops an unknown fear. They are aware about the opportunity lost but somehow they have started to live with it. It is a human habit to fear something and then develop their own reasons to avoid it. Once these reasons get developed, People start to demonstrate an uncompromising belief in them. It is more of a shell that is hard to break no matter how much effort you might want to put.
Opportunity is the first and classic mechanism which can compel anyone to take up fear head on. It starts with an introspection of the fear inside you and than stepping back to look the opportunity behind it. The more compelling the opportunity is, the more willingness it can generate inside people to overcome the fear. You may not learn to drive a car because of fear of accidents but if look at the advantage of being independent and driving you own vehicle you might want to learn it right now. You might have developed the fear of public speaking but if you look at the recognition it can give you and your literary thoughts you might want to reconsider it again. This and plenty of such small and big situations keep us away from achieving small things in life that matter the most. Some of these have become deep rooted habits which we might even don’t recognize at any point in our life. The thumb rule is always about recognizing such fears and seeking the opportunity to unravel its true face. It is the solution you have to sell yourself so that you become prepared to achieve the next best level in your life.
2) Get The Facts – Many times we develop the fear of something just because others feel it the same way. We may not have a single idea of the circumstance or situation but the argument we build around our thoughts is pretty strong. To take an example- You might not want to work with company X just because everyone feels they exploit their employees. You hear it once, twice and probably from many other individual which make you believe the same way. Never in your life you have stepped the premises of the company but you become one of its strong critic. Such situations are nothing but summation of the fear that explodes in a certain way. The formation of opinion and then our blind support for it develops a potent fear in our heart and mind.
Sometimes the best way to overcome fear developed in such manner is by getting the facts. You may not like to take up a course in the college, you might have heard bad about that new car, you might have developed fear of your new high school coach and so on and so forth. The only thing which can help you in such situations is to get facts and develop your own opinion. It is always advisable to hear from different people but to do what you think is best for you. Doing what others think is best for you equal giving space to the fear and going towards more comfortable option. Charting out your own path is always difficult. So the next time you feel a fear of something based on things you have heard, go and get the facts in front of you to decide on your own.
3) Flex Your Muscles – Sometimes the best way to unravel the face of the fear is by taking it head on. The first person who went to the moon, the first person who climbed Mt. Everest never knew what they are about to face and if they would ever come alive. They might have examples of unsuccessful people but it never deterred them to take their fear head on. The intensity of fear might not be that large at our level but if it does exist then it needs to be tackled efficiently. This aspect of fear relates to the most common type of fear that we experience in everyday lives. There are numerous situations in our lives which we haven’t heard of and may not present any material benefit. But still we take them head on and gain experience in the interim.
The virtual concepts of underdogs who eventually come and win presents a situation when they are up against the best and still they are able to score the home run. The best in athletics, tennis, soccer, baseball had to always flex their muscles and show their true worth. Yes they can see the opportunity and might have emboldened themselves with some great fear quotes but when it gets dirty they know how to play it. The essence of this method is to take a deep dive in your fear and experience it first hand. If you trust your abilities and the hard work that you have put the dreaded task should compare to a cake walk. But the main point here is the trust in yourself and your abilities that have got sharpened after years of persistence and hard work.
4) Embrace Failure- Don’t hesitate to fail and do fail often then not taking any risk at all. Sometimes it is not easy to unravel the true face of fear. The magic here is not to give up but carrying on with your expedition to get the success no matter how expensive it is. Failure is the biggest factor that makes us risk averse and help fear overcome our senses. Most of the battles get lost even before fighting just because the fear of failure makes us drop our weapon. Ask yourself how many times you have not taken up something just because in your heart you know that you would not be able to achieve it no matter how hard you might try. The situation becomes more uncomfortable when it is about something you value and wanted the most in your life. Living the last day of your life and missing things which has just been dropped because of fear of failure is definitely a bad situation which anyone of us would hate to face.
Embracing failure is about recognizing the value of failures and taking them more as a part of journey than the end itself. You need to keep your sails open and then wait for the wind to blow. Success comes eventually but only to those who have given their best to it. I still remember a person who always wanted to have his own business in hydraulics. He left his job and invested all his money. Soon failure stuck him and he not only lost his investment but his house too. He again took up the job and started to devote his nights on the things he wanted to do. Every time he went to market with new things he failed miserably. This continued for long and so his willingness to succeed. He always thought that he has learnt so much that success can come to him anytime. And indeed it happened. Success was just round the corner and in few months he tripled profit in comparison to everything he had lost. The biggest advice he gave was to rise from failures. Each failure corrects something inside you which you might not have realized earlier. It is fear of failure and more failures that keep people away. After all it is success, prosperity and fulfillment of your dreams that remains hidden behind the face of –“fear of failure”.
5) Develop An Attitude- Lastly, It is at times your attitude to kill fear that helps you unravel the true face of it. This is more of a trait that gets acquired over years of experience that makes you the perfect player in the game. Look at Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps and many other people who despite facing the best of fears in their mind have developed an attitude to take it head on. They maintain their composure, calmness in adverse situation and never go off their plans. Life has taught them how to win and also how to win big. They were not born winners but they become one after years of hard work. Yes they do fear the unknown but they have developed an uncanny habit to look directly into its eyes and give their best shot.
Attitude matters and if it is one of the winners you move ahead by taking fear in your stride. It is not easy to develop an attitude because you need to put years of hard work. But nevertheless there is always a start and a way forward. It is important to enjoy the journey and learn the intricacies which makes you wiser and prepares you for the next steps to face the ultimate fear. Uncover the true face of fear and make it look miniscule. Let Fear fears you most than you fear it at the face.

A rising tide lifts all boats, a changing tide tests the strength of your anchor. If fear is forcing you not to even test the waters then you need to get geared up for it. It is not bad to have the fear but it is bad not to face it and take it head on. Success never comes too easy and the fear of failure never makes it easy either. It is all in the mind to conquer the worst fear and get the best out of our life. The life with no fear may not be that enjoyable, but the life where you have killed all fears and got the best in you is the life which is worth living.
