Pen and Paper as Tool for Excellent Productivity

23 March 2009 No Comment

The Power of Pen and Paper is often not recognized. We all are so much accustomed with keyboards that our typing speed is probably way ahead of our hand writing quality. As we have progressed in life our methods and assumptions have becomes more technology dependent. We have devised ways and means to keep ourselves updated and even give shape to our thoughts. This however by no means has taken the limelight off the old ways like pen and paper approach.

Pen and Paper has always been my favorite. I use them for variety of purposes which include the time spent on my job, at home, or even during travel. The biggest and the most important use of pen and paper is its ability to help you dug deep into your thoughts. It has an immense power to question, provide solution, and even give direction to your thoughts.

On job pen and paper helps me to explain concepts, solve problems etc. at the flick of second. I keep a small paper pad with me all the time. Generally my subordinates have lot of queries which require various steps in order to reach the solution. Also at times resolution need to be given in form of some formulas, ideas related to graphs, sites to visit on internet etc.

Pen and Paper becomes a lot handy at these times. This has been very helpful to the team that they at times stick it or even consult me over again after a long period of time. I believe this is lot better than giving straightforward instructions to people which subsequently can lead to various conflicts. It’s a kind of written proof on both sides which help you to be productive by minimizing the communication.

I have used Pen and Paper as a tool many times just to ward of anger of people or queries which in itself are self explanatory. This is excellent tool if you are serving either an internal or external customers. The best way to ward of query or anger is to ask the other person to write the problem they are facing. This pause mechanism has a lot of power in itself. I have seen many times that while writing people get the solution themselves and they just thank me and go back. How things happen? Well it’s simple. When they see a problem, without giving thought their mind goes into the hostile environment. The urge to curse someone for wasted time becomes so important that they forget everything and start to complain. In all these cases one need to give them pen and paper and ask them to write their problems.

In personal life I use it for variety of purposes. Important tasks are always jolted down on small piece which I then put in my back pocket. It helps a lot in organizing my thoughts especially when I start to blog. There are number of things which go into my mind many times. Generally I look for extension of my thoughts and in the process I cancel and promote many other related thoughts. I usually get lost in this approach and waste a lot of time in case I do it in my thoughts. Hence the best way is to seek help of pen and paper. I have so many things jolted down on paper at this moment that probably I have material to blog for next quarter. Most of the bloggers keep looking for topics and I strongly believe that their best solution is pen and paper. Any thought, no matter good or bad, you have to put it on paper. The best thing is not to keep anything in your mind at all. After some time you would find some ideas as boring and worthless but then you would also graduate some ideas to the level that a nice post can be written about it.

There are many things which keep rotating in my mind. I sometimes need a break for them but essentially that could not happen till the time I write it down on a paper. I have sometimes found nuggets of information which gets processed at later stage. Pen and paper approach has done a lot to increase my productivity. All cyclical thoughts which keep rotating in mind have got organized and have become my strength. Surely pen and paper approach is best thing I can suggest in this blog to my readers.
