Planning For Graduate Studies

Those of you who think planning for undergraduate studies is hard then let me tell you- planning for graduate studies is harder. When we enter undergraduate study we usually apply for a subject we like and after starting the degree we have 1 year time to decide upon our majors. We have our professors’ helps and advice when we have doubts about selecting our majors but when we apply for graduate studies- everything needs to be decided way before the admission. You have to plan and select everything when you apply for the degree. This is why planning for graduate studies need more time and concentration as well as effort from the student’s side.

·        Start planning at least 1 year before you start applying: Yes, you should start your planning way before you start applying for graduate studies. It is better to talk with your professors when you plan to apply for higher studies. They know your potentials better than anyone and also they are in the best position to give you advice. Also, recommendation of professors is greatly valued in the application procedure of graduate studies. So, you must keep in touch with your professors when you plan to pursue higher studies.

·        Choose your program very carefully: There are some universities which are better in business programs and there are some which are better in engineering programs. So, choose the one that best suits you. Also, you need to look at the university’s funding policies so that you can know whether you are eligible for scholarships. I would recommend you to go for the university that provides you funding.

·        Contact the professors of your aspired university: It is always recommended that you should contact your desired university’s professors to get more knowledge about the graduate program. Some universities have higher admission requirements than others and sometimes they take students on conditions. So, you should talk with the professors to get a clear idea about the whole admission procedure. You can also consult with the university’s admission counselor for detail information. Also, some programs require choosing thesis topics when applying for the program.  For this reason it is also better if you have an idea about the university’s research areas as well.

·        Read the admission requirements thoroughly: Do not get disappointed if you are academically not eligible for your desired program. There are some universities which admit students on the basis of their job experiences even if the students do not meet the academic requirements. Different universities have different entry requirements for their programs. You need to read carefully when you are planning to apply for any program. Also, you should start preparing all the necessary documents needed for your application as well. Usually the documents which are required for application are-

ü  Official transcripts and/or degree certificate.

ü  Recommendation letters.

ü  English language proficiency test score (International students).

ü  Sample of written work/CV/GMAT/GRE score (in some cases).

·        Apply long before the deadline: Each program has different deadlines. You need to check the university website to know your program’s deadline. There are some universities which enroll students throughout the year and there are universities which enroll students twice/once a year. Especially international students need to check deadlines because many universities have different deadlines for international students. You should apply way before the deadline because seats in graduate studies are limited and the application process takes a long time. You should send your application package with all necessary documents before the deadline. There can be cases where packages might get misplaced and the university might ask for more papers from you if they think it is necessary for your admission. This is why sending papers before the deadline is beneficial so that if necessary, you have enough time to send other papers asked by the university.

Planning for graduate studies is a complex process because a student has to contact professors for recommendations, collect transcripts, certificates which take time. Also, your up-to-date CV should be prepared so that you submit it with your application if necessary. It is better if you prepare a checklist before you start applying for graduate studies. In this way you will not miss any documents.

Do not think all work has been done after sending your application package. You need to check your e-mail regularly for any updates from the university as e-mail is the main source of communication between universities and applicants. Also, if you have any doubts about your application then you can ask the graduate program either by calling or mailing them. In the end what can be said is that planning for graduate studies need full concentration and focus from the students. If you do not pay attention then you may lose your chance of getting admitted to your desired university. So, if you want to enter graduate program then do not wait, start planning now before it’s too late.
