Professional Development – Five Ways To Excel In Your Profession
Desire to excel in one’s career or profession is an ‘instinct’ to most of the successful people these days. Only those who are trying to excel and work hard on their Professional Development skills stand a chance to win. Rest all end up as also-rans. But success and excellence doesn’t come easily to everyone. Given the competitive work environments where everyone is trying to outdo the other; only those who excel in their respective field will always remain ahead of others and are going to survive and move up the ladder. These ‘excellent’ people are an asset to their organisation and no organisation can afford to lose them. Professional Development is all about making things happen for you when you set out to achieve the impossible in your profession.
Professional knowledge provides you the platform to launch your career. But your excellence in your area of expertise decides how high you reach. Our collages, institutes and B-schools impart us the skill and knowledge required to become a professional, but they don’t teach us how to excel in our profession. If you ever wanted to excel but did not know how, here lies the answer. You don’t have to search for another school that teach magic mantras or give powerful potions to achieve excellence. Right here are five important aspects that will help you excel in your chosen field and constitute an important aspect of Professional Development.
INTEREST- Take interest in whatever you do. It is as simple as that. Get immersed in the task that comes your way. If you are not interested in your occupation; there’s no chance that you’ll ever do well, forget excelling. Lack of interest will never allow you to apply your 100% and you’ll barely be able to concentrate on the job at hand. The quality of the output of the job done with interest will be obvious.
Taking interest in the task at hand will fill you with loads of energy. You will enjoy every moment on job. It will open up many unforeseen avenues. Further, if you show interest in your job, your organisation will show interest in you. Taking interest in the present is bound to fetch you compound interest in the future. An interest in job is the basic criteria and first step to grow in your journey of professional development.
INQUISITIVENESS – ‘To understand the things, change them. To change the things, understand them’, goes an adage. In other words, get deep into how, why, when, what and which of all that professional happenings around you. Have a childlike inquisitive nature. Ask questions and be adamant till you get a reply. This may irritate some of your colleagues and bosses, but eventually they will understand your motive and appreciate that you are only trying to improve your know-how and understanding of the trade. Your ‘silly’ questions will clear your doubts and upgrade your knowledge. But if you don’t ask them, you remain silly forever. Your inquisitive nature will give you a cutting edge and a real push in your professional development intiative.
INITIATIVE – An important aspect of Professional development, The secret of getting ahead is getting started! And only you can take a step and start your own journey towards excellence. Don’t expect someone else to do the favours and give you a push. Take initiative. Volunteer to start any process and start action. Take that first step; and step-by-step you will explore and learn more. Experiment and innovate. Don’t expect a cakewalk. Your initiatives will meet some challenges that will certainly help you grow as a more experienced person. Those who sit back will always get a backseat. Go ahead and you will remain ahead of others.
The more and more initiatives you take, the more confident you become. The more confident you become, the more initiatives you take. The cycle repeats itself and propels you to a new high every time.
INFORMATION – This is an information age. You must be well informed to remain in form. Collect as much information as you can, about your profession and related developments around. Upgrade your knowledge every now and then. There are numerous books on any given subjects. Study them. Take notes. There are magazines and periodicals dealing with your field of interest. Take time to go through them. Do not let your information and knowledge remain idle. Apply it whenever you see an opportunity. Internet is a sea of information. You can access it round the clock from the comforts of your home. Download tutorials, e-books and other information that will help you to improve upon your knowledge. Knowledge has power and power makes the difference. Information gives a food for your Professional Development initiatives.
Such well read, well informed, resourceful persons are desirable to every organisation. Your subordinates will approach you to learn more from you. Your seniors will always look up to you for latest information. In any case you will remain undisputedly above most of the people around you. You will excel and be an example for others to follow.
INTERACTION - In any given profession and in field of professional development, there are people who have already proved their mettle and are regarded as gurus in their field. So take time to interact with them. Try to learn the tricks of the trade from them. Seek their guidance. Also mingle with the likeminded success oriented people. Discuss with them various topics related to your profession. You never know some of them may suggest a solution you were looking for. This interaction will also keep you in touch with the latest happenings and advancements in your profession. Pretty soon, you will also achieve guru like status and stand distinctly ahead of others.
