Retaining Employees – Simple Tips


There are several reasons why, as an employer, you would need some insight into what to do and say in order to keep your employees happy at the work place. First of all, your team of trusted employees is by far your most valuable asset. You couldn’t work anything out without them, especially if they collaborate well as a unified team. Each of them knows their individual duties and responsibilities and follows them to the letter. Without any one of your subordinates, your whole system would start to shake. And because there are inevitable situations when they choose to leave, you need to learn the best tips in retaining employees for as long as possible. You need to get creative and make them feel so at ease at the office that they wouldn’t yearn for a change of scenery. Try taking into account the following simple tips:

 

1.  Shift the perspective. It is important that you put yourself in their position for a second and ask yourself why would I want to leave this job? Either because it offers no or little prospects or because it might become unchallenging after a while, be mercilessly honest with yourself. Once you’ve identified the reason, you can act accordingly. And remember that most people don’t start looking for something else because they want more money.

2. Create a stress free environment. It is a well known fact that, for retaining your employees, you need to secure a comfortable working atmosphere for them. Under any circumstance don’t make them work more in the same amount of time and don’t threaten to fire them. If you need to make an observation, do it firmly, but without a hint of meanness. Use diplomacy always and allow your employees to jump over some restrictions in order to have as many liberties as possible.  

3. Give those well deserved rewards. Another simple trick for retaining your employees is to give them bonuses for more significant accomplishments. Try giving the bonus as soon after the achievement as you can – it will be most satisfactory for your loyal employee. Also, overtime needs to be paid always and it wouldn’t hurt to say to your employee how big a help those extra hours provided.

4. Don’t neglect feedback. Feedback is crucially important, especially when a new person is just starting out. If you neglect to evaluate their activity, they will feel ignored and they might also feel that their work is not appreciated at all. If you want to succeed in retaining your employees, you most certainly wouldn’t want that to happen. Answer their emails and pay attention to their suggestions. Consider, then evaluate them objectively after which you should let them know as soon as possible what you’ve decided.

5. Train them well. If an individual is doing extremely well in a certain position, it doesn’t mean he or she doesn’t want to learn new skills and doesn’t want to step up to the next level. Give your employees the chance to shine and follow their personal goals by organizing working seminars, by sending them to training or coaching sessions. Also, you might want to ensure good communication between departments by putting together small vacations with the purpose of exercising team building.

6. People of value. If you are the manager of a bigger company, it doesn’t mean it’s an excuse for you not to keep in touch with as many of your employees as possible. Try meeting them personally and tell them they are irreplaceable in the company. Keep in mind that you can make someone feel valuable not necessarily by offering a cash reward, but also by communicating face to face. 

7. Promote the integrity of your firm. It is as simple as that – if your company follows strict powerful values, you should definitely advertise that. You should make a point of it and you will attract more people whom will hold the same values. If honesty, punctuality, team spirit and perfectionism are the things which best describe your company, making them known will help pass them on to your employees.

8. Set yourself as an example. If they need a role model, you are their boss and they will follow your lead. Reveal to them your principles, your strengths and your virtues so they know what it’s expected of them to provide.

9. The wind of change. This might turn out to be a risky, yet profitable enterprise. You should try giving old golden employees new challenges to face. Never let anybody get rusty. But treat it as a helpful exercise. Also, you must always show them what future opportunities they’ll be able to score in your company if they stay on, assure them that you are all for promoting people from the inside.
