Corporate culture is a relatively new term that has entered our vocabulary, and it is a complex aspect of business that is more increasingly said to be a very important factor in determining performance and sustainability of a company. Corporate culture has no precise definition but in a larger sense it has become known as the collection of ethics, practices, attitudes that define how a company conducts business, and at the same time influences its employee’s behavior. So what is the role of corporate culture in organizations, and how has it become such an important factor? Moreover, what are the elements that define corporate culture and its role? These are a few questions that will try to be answered in the paragraphs below.
· Corporate vision. An integrate part of corporate culture that defines what a company intends to become or to achieve in the near or distant future. It’s more or less the mantra of the company. · Beliefs. No notion of culture can exist without beliefs, and corporate culture is no exception. The belief in the product the company makes is the most important one, it’s what defines if a company is going to become very successful or at best mediocre. If the people that work in the company don’t have faith in the product, and for example use the product of a rival company, how can you expect anything else from your clients? So, the role of corporate culture in this instance is that of a selection of those who believe in what the company has to offer and those who don’t.
· Past experiences. Any sort of culture arises out of not only a philosophy, but draws its applicability from past experiences. If a company has been standing for more than a decade, and its tradition is one of the most important aspects of the brand, than that means that something must have been going right all these years. Taking as much as you can both from the successes and most of all from the mistakes of the past, is a fireproof way of ensuring a better way forward for the company.
· Communication. Another very important aspect of corporate culture is that of the way in which the company chooses to communicate with its clients. Of course that comes down to the marketing department, but as they choose to [resent the product, that’s the way everybody will see it. Appearances are sometimes more important than the actual characteristics of a product. Communication is what can separate two companies with exactly the same product. If one chooses to neglect the aspect of communication than it most likely will become far inferior to the one that doesn’t.
· Leadership. This is one of the most important characteristics of any company or corporation. Strong leadership can ensure no mistakes that can affect the company’s image will ever happen. As well thru the team leaders of the company, the ideas get filtered down. If you have good quality leaders than you will almost certainly get employees that understand and get to grips with the company’s corporate culture.
· Assumptions. The role of corporate culture is not only to define the way the company chooses to do business but also to predict what to expect from itself, and not least, from its product.
Therefore the role of corporate culture is one of the most important in any kind of organization. It gives the sense of unity and of belonging to everybody evolved in the company. Be it from the fact that they believe that their product is the best or can be the best out there, or from the fact that they share common values; every member of any corporation can understand instinctively the importance of corporate culture. No employee can ever get integrated in the team of any company if he doesn’t share the corporate culture of the organization.
