Setting Realistic Targets
Goals vary in their duration. There are short, medium, and long term goals that help us achieve different things in life. One of the important ingredients of achieving big in life is planning. And when you plan you set various milestones and targets. It is such an important step in whole process that any wrong projection exposes us to failure. Adjustments can always be made during the course but it is always better to be right once then to be wrong several times. Setting realistic targets and then achieving them is an ideal situation which everyone aspires for. But problem is that targets are set either too short or too far stretched and it kills people and process in its fury. Realignments happen but they put very bad taste in mouth of everyone.
Setting realistic targets is such an important aspect that it influences the satisfaction level of an individual or a group. Work not only gives us our livelihood but it has deep impact on our psychological and mental well being. No one likes to be idle and there is no one who can work for long in adverse far stretched situations. End result is that we have people who are
1) Highly unsatisfied in life
2) Unsatisfied with their jobs
3) Who became worthless with time
Keeping the above in mind, The Power of setting realistic targets is immense. This is the first step which if taken with right spirit has the potential to work wonders in both personal and professional life.
Now the big question- How to set Realistic Targets?
The start point of this exercise is always
1) Your experience
2) The feedback
3) Your best guess
When you have an arbitrary figure in mind, all you need to do it
1) Add a part that extends it by a bit
2) Add a part that makes it a bit stretched
3) Add a part that is just above the normal
This way
1) You challenge yourself to do extra every time
2) Achieving that promotes satisfaction
3) You approach the next part with more energy.
And if you need to communicate your target to others
1) Communicate the part you can achieve
2) Always achieve more than you communicate
3) Delight people with better than expected results.
A habit of doing bit extra from your Normal has the ability to bring the best within you. Something more always prompts you to do more than what you have set out yourself for.
